_ The above soiree, held at the Palaca lheatre on Friday evening, was a decided success, about fifty couples heme present on the floor, besides a few onlookers in the gallery. Excellent mußio was supplied by Mrs Butcher {piano), Messrs Varnham (olarionet). J. Muguire, jnr,, (cornet), and A Barnard (bass viola). A;well arranged programme of twentj-four dances\v elusive of extras was gone" through with apparent hearty enjoyment to all. : , Light refreshments were-, supplied I at a side table in the hall, and a most excellent supper proved, wbioh wag catered forby MesMbfouke (capt), ; W-Haigh (Lieut;) ®; w. Daff. ihe able ffaß very prettily arranged, ana Mesdatoes Maguire, Pepper and Gflo, Humphries, and Misses Magiiira andHobman officiated as waitresses, and deserve no end of praise for thoic indefatigable' efforts in this line. These ladies worked very hard all throughout the evening, and are to be congratulated upon their untiring energy, ■ ... °

After Mr Wood had concluded his remarks, Messrs Sutherland tiros, of Napier,'gave a Bplendid exhibition of step t dancing, and later on in tha evening Mr Sutherland, junr, gava the sword nance in perfect style, The surplus provisions of last night's supper were Bold by auction at noon on Saturday, Mr P. H, Wood having kiudly oonßented to" render his services as auetioneer.
