FIRE AT WELLINGTON.
Considerable Damage, [By Telegraph.—Our Correspondent.] Wellington, Monday. A serious firo ocourred at 6 a.m. on Sunday morning, whereby Chalmer's cooperage, on Waterloo Quay, was entirely destroyed. Tho total damage is estimated at £3,500, of which £I2OO is covered by insurance in the N.Z. Office The J?urraers' Allianco premises, next door, had a narrow oscapo from destruction, but fortunately tho damage done will not exceed £IOO. If tho Btrong northerly wind which prevailed on Saturday had been blowing at the time the fire occurred nothing could have savod the Farmers Alliance building, Booth and Co.'a timber yard, and probably the Wellington Meat Export Co.'a freezing works, to say nothing of great risk to tho Harbour Board's large wool and flax shed,
The cooperage plant was tbo most extensive in the Colony, and Mr Chalmers has sustained a crushing loss by tho fire, The origin of the firo is a profound mystery. It might be mentioned that Mr Chalmers is the chief witness in tho Grainge-Love shooting caso in whioh tbo accused Graingo has been committed for trial.
