WAIRARAPA A.A. & CYCLING CLUB.

First Annus! Sports. omoiM. President: Dr.Hoaking; Vice-Presidents: W.H.BDubam,E3q. l O.A.Pownnll,Bsq. > E, M, D, Whataan, Esq.; Captain, Mr Geo. Wallace; Sub-Captain, Mr A. Caselberg; Roa. Treasurer, Mr E. 0, Eton; Hon. Seoraiary, M.'Wm Jeffries; Management Commitieo, Messrs A, E. D'Aroy, W, Broad, 0. Clarion, P, R Brabant, C. Perry, and it. J, Malcolm; Siarter, Mr Lowis; Timekeepers, Mets:s J. Muir and A. Elkins,

The first annual sports held under the auspices of the Wairarapa A.A. ■and 0. Club, were held yesterday on the Masterton Park Oval, and in spile of the fact that the weather was any» thing but favourable, the meeting turned out most successfully, Mo t of the afternoon a drizzling rain fell, which prevented very many from attending, still quite a large number of spectator turned up, and were repaid by witnessingsome very well contested and interesting events. Of course, the principal event of the day was the Championship Race (250 yds) when Arohie D'Aroy for the first time met Norman Gurr, the well-known Wellington amateuv, who hashilheiiobad things pretty muoh his own way, Eton and Pilojle also entered, but did not start, so that the race was left entirely between the Wairarapa and Wellington representatives. Fromasplondid start the two got away, D'Aroy ha?ing the slight advantage of the inside place, but this was quite compensated by the fact that Gtrr Kept him so close to the flags that-running a dead level race as the men had difficulty in turning the corners, and oncß very neatly got inside the track. About thirty yirds from the finish D'Arcy put on a grand sputl, and amidst great exoitement breasted the tape two yards ahead of Gurr. The win was a thoiougbly popular one, and D'Aroy was immediately seized and carried shoulder high by some of his admirers, Gurr was loudly cheered on leaving the traok for the splendid race he ran. Taking into consideration the rough state of the track and also that a head wind was blowing with ram, the time was fast, the distance being cut out in 27 seconds, A good deal of interest was evinced in the Two Mile Bioycle Bacebetween Pearse and Cooper, and to the surprise of many the latter (with 150 yards start) proved a fairly easy win* ner. Had Pearse, however, been in anything like his true foim, the result must have been different, but suffering as be has beeen of late from a severe attack of la grippe, it was plucky of him to stai tat all. The Ladies' Bracelet ptoved a very easy thing for Gun, as D'Aroy did not start. In this race E. fl, Eton ran up tomarkbly well, Cashion, Jewries Pragnell and MoKerrow finishing in the order named, Another interesting event was tho Consolation (160 yards), Diabantand Pringle running a dead beat. On running off, Pringle pioved the best man, winning by about ha'f a yaid,

An excellent progiamme of wol'selected mneie was played through during lho afternoon, by Pearson's Piivate Brass Band, under the con* dnotorship of Mr George Gray, jun,, and tended much to liven up tho proceedings, The duties of starter were Impartially canted out by Mr P. 0. Lewis, Messrs J. Muir and A. A, Elkine acting as timekeepers, and Mr Jas. Maoara, Mr B. M. D, Whatman and the Rev Father MoKenna as judgn, Gi'eat praiso is due to the Management Committee for the manner in which everything connected with tho meeting' was arranged; Messrs Olaytoo, Malcolm, and the indefatigable Secretary (Mr Wm. Jeffries) bein<; especially prominent. In selecting Mr J erTries as Secretary the Club certainly did the right thing, for it would be hard to pick a man who would—or could—carry out his arduous duties more thoroughly, Judging from yesterday's meeting the W.A.A, and C, Club, is in a healthy condition, and the young men of Masterlou and the surrounding distiiot seem to hare taken up amateur athletics in real earnest. We trust to see the Club go on and prosper. Appended are4he results of the various events:— MA!DEN RACK, IOOYDS.
