SECOND EDITION Wairarapa Daily Times. [ESTABLISHED 1878]

THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 23, 1893.

Being the extended title of the Wairarapa Daily, with which it is IDENTICAL

From all we can learn, a fair prospect exists of a reasonable subsidy being collected in Mastwton towards the Queensland Relief Fund, There is not quito the onthusinsni exhibited over it that i 8 displayed in some places, where a sense ot rivalry assists a sentiment of humanity in making up a large total. In the large towns of New Zealand, energetic efforts are being mado to Btruggle for a top place on the New Zealand list. Even smallor towns are watching each other in this matter, and the element of competition is a factor in the results. In some townships Committoes are at work and active canvasses are heing made which must result in large subscriplions, The success of the Fund as far as New Zealand is concerned is BBEiired and it is enough if a centre like Mastorton opens a list and takes such contributions as may come in voluntarily. A reasonable amount in this way will be secured, although it might be doubled if that pressure were applied which js noticeable in other I quarters, viz,, an active canvass, It is a satisfaction to know that all the world 1b coming more or less to the aid of the Queensland sufferers and there is every prospect of the fund obtaining dimensions sufficient to miiigatethe calamity as far as it may be alleviated by outside help, Probably many in this town if they felt that an adequate sum to compass the objeot in view were not being raised, would, out of a feeling of humanity, put forth a stronger effort, but they are unlikely to do so merely for the sake of making a parado of what the town is capable of doing in competition with other centres of population, On the other hand it is clearly the duty of those who can spare a little towards a fund which has a claim on almost all, to send their contribution voluntarily to the Borough Council office.
