The report of the Finance Committee wag read and adopted,
engineer's repobt. Masterion Biding.- The contraotors engaged on metalling repairs on the main lines in this riding are making good headway with their work except on the To Ore Ore-Bideford line where the progress with the carting and in other respects is of a less satisfactory charaoter. Notice has therefore been served on this contractor requiring him to increase his staff and keep pace with tbe requirements of his contract.
The contractor for the Waingawa to Camp line, during his absence on bis other section of roud, has allowed the fencesenoloßing the Waipoua embankments to fall into great disrepair aud has been notified that unless they are substantially restored within tbe next seven daye, that the Council will put the natter in hand at his expense. Maslertou to Waimata Eoad.—An encroachment of the Kuamahanga River at its eastern bank, half a mile above theTe Ore Ore bridge threatens the eastern approach and it is proposed, subject to tbe Council's approval, toundortako tbo construction of a groin for its diversion. This would be done in conjunction with Mr Caselberg who is also interested in the preservation of the rive :*bnk also his • frontage. Mr CaselbergTill agree to land the necessary timber on tbe ground if the Council will undertake to build and load the groin, The offer is one which should commend itself to the favourable consideration ot the Council, Wainuioru Hiding.—Masterton to Waimata Road (maintenance contract),—The surface metal repairs, which havo been in hand during the month, are now all but completed. Eketahuna JR idi ng ,—Eke ta Jmna to Tinui Road.—Contract No. 87 (108-13 chains of road formation),—This contract should now havo been well in hand, but as the Council oro awaro it has been transferred to tbo next lowest tenderer, ther is ovory reason to bo* lieve it will bo put in hand during the next few days.
Dillon's metalling contract (Eketa ■ huna Road Board) continues to mnko very slow progress. Tho contraoy however, now appears to realiajKuo importance of working to tho terms of his contract, and less trouble is thereforo experienced in conducting the work,
The metalling repairs contract between Mangaone Eoad Junction and Eketahuna has not so far been started, but as there is ample time to perform it before the close of tho season, I havo not'so far pressed tho contractor in the matter,
Opaki-Manawatu Road.—Tho roadman in charge of this line reports satisfactory progress with the metal carting contract for repairing the road surface. Alfbedton Riding,—Eketahuna to Tinui Eoad. Alfredton-Castlehill Boad.-Iho contractor for repairing this lino has intimated by letter that he has resumed work, and asks that the contract may bo oxamined at an early dato, An opportunity will be taken during the next tour of inspection to examine tho work, when it is to be hoped a moro favourable report can bo made on it than that furnished to tho Council at its last Bitting,
