On Friday last, Mr R. A, Wakelin, of Groytown, was in Carterton, and after attending tho Earn Fair went to tho railway statiou and left his horse and trap standing at tho back of the shed whilo he wont for a minute to the train. The horso, startled by the doparting train, bolted off and got amongst the stumps, overturning tho vehiole. Aftor negotiating the deop, dry ditoh that bounds the enclosure, the animal bounded up onto the line, dragging the trap along on its side and the collision of tho wheels with the rails threw the cart into position again, and righted it, and at that moment one of tho railway officials secured the horse which appeared not much damaged, The splash board of tho vehicle was smashed and ono or two minoV injuries that could easily bo repaired were found and the hames of the harness were slightly bent. Mr Wakolin reached his homo safely that night. The next morning, after the splash-board and other damages to the cart had been mado good, Mr Wakelin and his son Percy, and a lad named Thomas, drove down to tho farm on tho plains near by. They arrived in safety, but in crossing a rut the sudden jolt broke the hames in two, evidently where they had been damaged on the previous day at the Carterton station. To lighten the shafts, which had dropped, young Percy handed tho reins to Thomas and jumpoddown, but the horso finding its head looso bounded off, Mr Wakelin scrambled out, or nas jolted out, falling on his hand,which ho sprained and damaged the thumb. The horse made for tho gateway,and striking the post young Thonias was pitched up in the air, turned a somersault and lauded fairly down as if, seated comfortably at home in a chair, instead of tho middle of the road. He stared around in a dazed way and then picked himself up and felt himself over and it gradually dawned upon him that he had escaped with nothing worse than a _ shaking.- Tho horso had continued its careor, Btnashed up against some obstructions tbat havo been put up to protect trees plan ted on the road side, ana did not pull up until the conveyance was a total wreck,—Observer.

Darling, who met the Bottlers at Carterton lastovoning and is the moving spirit in the establishment of the extent sive dairy factories on the West Coast, writing to a friond in the Wairarapa says he will only be able to bold one meeting in this locality at present, as he has to return to Palmerston to arrange for a meeting of the directors there a low days henco and to agree on the prospectus. He states that the farmora along this coastappear to have takon up the matter with considerable spirit, and it is proposed to orcct sovoral large faotorios with a number of creameries along tho railway line as tho cream can be carried cheaply in this way. Mr Darling was ovidently oertain ho would be able to establish a factory at Carterton, and that he could arrange for creameries along tho railway line from Featherston to Eketahuna. Tho creameries would be erected wherever not less than 200 oowa could be guaranteed.
David Brown, an apprentico boy in the employ of Mr George Watson, of Homobush, was charged boforo His Worship the Mayor (MrO. A. Pownall) and Mr H. i 3. Eton J,P., with absconding from his work. Brown who was arrostcd, under a warrant, at Hayes' Circus at Ekctabuna, pleaded guilty and expressed coutrition. The Bench decided to deal leniently with the oaso and discharged the boy with a caution on his promising to go back to his work. Mr H, Udy of Greytown, will start next week to erect his sawmill in the Forty-mile Bush, The first site wll be near tho Hawera Junction Hotel and to Mr Yule's mill, but after a time it is proposed to placo Mr Udy's mill near tho Mangatainoka stream, whore a railway station will bo situated, An excellent plant will bo put down, capable of turning out a large quantity of sawn timbor, together with planing machine, and a twenty-five horse engine will supply tho motive power.
Mr W. 0. Quick, of Wellington, recently spent a conpio of days at Gladstone fishing in tho Wuiouioru. Ho succeeded iu securing botween 70 and 80 pounds of trout, and when it is considered that he put back anything under 31ba in weight, this is not at all a bad record. Bilton nutißes that at next meeting of the Wairarapa South Featherston Town Licensing (Jommittee ho will apply for a transfer of the licenso of tho Victoria Hotol, Peathorston to Mr E. J. Searl.. An assault caso, in which two wellknown business moil wero tho prominent figures, engaged tho attention of Mr 0, 0. Graham, R.M-, for some time in tho Resident Magistrate's Court yesterday afternoon, the defendant was Andrew Campboll, manaaor of tho National Insurance Co., who was charged by tho prosecutor, George W, Smart, pawnbroker, of Manners street, with having committed an assault upon him an tho 17 f h January. There was a cross action, in which Campbell charged Smart with having used abusive language toward him on tho same day as tho alleged assault was committed Mr Skerrett appeared for Mr Smart, and Mr Gully for Mr Campbell. The cases were heard jointly. After hearing the evidenco, His Worship ospreased the opinion that Smart- had acted improperly throughout, and that ho had brought the whole troublo upon himsolf. He dismissed tho charge of assault against Oampboll, with £2 03 costs, und for using tho abusive language he fined Smart £2, and £1 8s costs,— Times,
