EKETAHUNA NOTES.

(By Our Own Correspondent),

A very successful picnic and concert was hold here yesterday, the occasion being the anniversary of the opening of tho Wesleyan Church. The weather was all that could be desired, and everyone seemed to thoroughly enjoy tbmselra. Tho Church was very tastefully decorated with evergreen wreaths, etc. Toe chair was occupied by Mr Matheson. Addresses were givon by the Eevs John Dukes, Elliott and Mr Baylies. A song rendered by Mrs Kibblewhite, was highly appreciated. The Sunday school choir also rendered a few choice selections. The Eev. Mr Dukes, in the course of his address, commented on the fulling off in tho church attendance and finances. He thought it was owing to the number of hotels in the districts, and the settlers wero to blame for allowing it to be so, the remedy being in their own hands. It was a curious fact that the majority of those that had fallen through drink were the sons of Christian parents. The Chairman said he could not agree with the remarks of the Bev, Mr Dukes. The parents may have, been members of a church, but they were certainly not Christians. Be had been in the past addicted to taking an occasional glass, but he was happy to say he bad got over that failing, and he might remark that to assist-in putting a stop to tho drink traffic he intended at the next licensing election to Bland on the Prohibition ticket,

Some hoys were caught making a raid on Mt Jones' orchard on Sunday last. Ihe outcome will be an interview with the R,M,

The weather for the last faw days has been very wet, with Boarcely any wind, Settlers are now taking advantage of the weather to fire the bush.

Quite an army of peddlers and hawkers are visiting the busk just now. Decidedly they should be compelled to pay a license, as being under no expense as far as rent, rates, and taxes are concerned, they can undersell thoso who are carrying on a lepliptQ business,
