Ordinary Meeting, The usual fortnightly meeting of the Masterton Borough Council was held last evening, there being present His Worship the Mayor and Councillors Heron, Hessey, Dixon, Mutrie, Yates, Feist, Culleu, and Chamberlain. minutes, • The minutes of the previous meetjing were read and confirmed. CORRESPONDENCE was received as follows:—From Alice Jacobs applying to he registered iib a Servants' Registry Ofiioi) keeper, From Mr H. Teuipsen culling attention to the state of the footpath in Dixon street opposite hi 3 property and offering to pay his share of the construction. RESOLUTIONS, _ It was decided to refer the application of, Mr Tempsen to the Works Committee with power to act. The application of Mrs Jacobs was acceded to, REI'OKTS, The report of the Gas Committee was read and adopted. GENERAL. It was decided not to accede to Mr B. P. Perry's request to lease the land adjoining the gas works. The question »f fencing at the back of the gas works was left in abeyance umil next meeting. The Town Clerk tendered an apolosy on behalf of O W. Perry, who was unavoidably absent. Is whs decided to grant Mr F. Hnlloway's application for a slaughterhouseliceuse.
The Clerk reported that he h«d made enquires regarding the removal of the ladder from the owner of Hull ntivei, and had found out that it was hanging in its place on the night ol Mr Natusoh'a firo.
The Mayor said that if such was the case the Council or Fire Brigade could not he b!am -d in any way. Ordinary.
Or Heron asked if Mr Allen hud signed his contract for the construction of Albert-street, The Olerk said he had not. Or Heron moved that unless the contract was signed within three days the contract be offered to the next lowest tenderer, and if he declines to accept, that fresh tenders be called The motion was carried.
Or Mntrie said ho had been asked by Mr Maguire whet the Council in. tended calling fresh tenders for carting. The Mayor said that as they had passed a resolution to procure a horse and cart of their own for the Borough they had no intention of calling tenders for the carting at the present time. THE WATER SUPPLY
The Mayor said it would be ueces--5.117 for someone to second his motion re the suggested water supply from Mes-rs Williams and Bectham's dam, Cr Dixon seconded the motion, fle thought the scheme much better than any ever before the Council. A loau would be required, and he thought the scheme might be carried out on a rather more extensive plan than sug-j gested by Hie Worship. He was of a opinion that a sufficient pressure to supply private houses, as well as for fire prevention purposes, might be obtained.
The Mayor said t-bat before putting the motion he would say that his idea iin advocating the supply was that they would gut on initiatory supply, and if at any future time they wanted a domestic supply from the Buama» hanga, the pipes would beiu the right direction. He did not chink they could get a domestic supply from the dam, but it would bo useful to irrigate gardens, etc The ratepayers, however, would havo to decide the matter. The motion that Messrs Williams and Beetham ho approached by a committee to ascertain upon what terms the Council might get the water, wins then put and carried unanimously. Crs Heron, Mutrie, Feist and His Worship the Mayor, were appointed a Conjuitteo to interview Mr W. H. Beetham.
Or Oulleu asked if a preferential rate could be siruck over the ward obtaining the benefit from the water.
The Mayor explained that unless the pipeß were earned into tho Outer Ward it would not be rated,
