SATURDAY, JANUARY 28, 1893.
Being the extended title of the Wajrarapa Daily, with which it is IDENTICAL
The " Wellington Catholic Times' has put a finger on the weak point ol the Opposition parly in New Zealand by declaring that a leader is wanted, Mr Bolleston is as good as gold, but he is not at all the sort of man to inspire a party to conquest. He speaks thetrutb.is thoroughly honest, and has the courage of his convictions, buffer all that he is not the man for Galway and we fear never will be, The " Catholic Times" sums him up as follows I
As a leader ot an Opposition ho is the coldest sorl of cold potato, His most recent public speech, delivered at Halswell, is neither tetter nor worse than the majority of his deliverances in the House, It is characterised by the nomby-pambyness which distinguishes most of his orations. The man and his speeches are totally devoid of magnetism, There is a drawl alike about his enunciation and his habits of thought. Ho is a Delpbio oraclo with a chronic cold in his head and chronio la grippe in his intellect. He is generally in the right, and yet nearly always makes himself appear in the wrong. Aa a critic he almost forces us to like the criticised, though wo know the latter to be a bad lot. He may havo a policy—Hcavon forbid that we should say he has not l-but that policy is so obscured by the matradcriuga of his mind that ho cannot reveal it to anybody elso, and hardly recognises it himself when ho meets it.
TheCoD6et7Btive Party wantsa stag man at its head very badly, The Liberals have one suob man, and perhaps only one who rises above mediocrity, and that is Mr Seddon. This one man is virtually Premier of his party, and with all his faults carries great weight in the country, If the Opposition Party is to liavo a fair chance, it must put someone in the forefront of the battle who can hold his own against Mr Seddon. Probably the best available leader would be Mr Brace, and the sooner he, or someone admittedly capable, takos charge of the party the better it will be for the Colony. Mr Bolleston is so good, so angelic, that we could quite beliovo hiin capable of surrendering bis position as leader and loyally following where he might clairn to lead. binj all personal considerations would I,
give way to a sense of duty to party. In some respects he is highly qualified for a first position. His political training has been almost perfect, and his political knowledge is unsurpassed, Still, he is not a General, and will not_ make a General, and the sooner he is relieved from a position which he fills with honour, but not with advantage, the better it will be for the Colony.
