Beino the extended title of the Wamaiiapa Daily, with which it h IDENTICAL
At r meeting of the Waste Land Board" held yesterday, Mr Hogg, M.H.R., called attention to certain utterances recently made by Mr Rollesion before his constituents. Ho remarked that those statements, if allowed to paßfl unchallenged, corning from a former Minister of Lands and tbe Leader of a Political Party, were apt to convey a false impression in distant places and operate prejudicially on settlement. He felt bound to defend the settlers of'his district, whose characters had been most cruelly slandered on mere heresay evidence. Mr Kolleston had stated that he was told that every third 'man in the Wairarapa was a speculator. He had no hesitation in saying that Mr Rolleston's informant was a bitter political partisan belonging to a Tory camp, Ths question at issue is not whether Mr Eolleßton's informant is a Tory, but whether the statement made by him is correct. A very great many people in th'iß district believe it to be so. Take the Leaders of tbe Liberal Party themselves, immaculates like Messrs Hogg, MoCardle, and Gardiner, Havo they not bought and sold land? have they not speculated? It is all nonsense Mr Hogg pretending to be virtuously indignant and to defend the reputation of bush settlers. There has been a lot of liberal land jobbing of which he must be fully cognisant and some of his most prominent supporters have been wont to boast openly of their prowess as speculators, That Mr Hogg has misconducted himself at the late meeting of the Land Board is quite evident and probably even tbe Government will feel thoroughly ashamed of the action of their henohman on this ocoaßion. Still, when tbe Government appoints a man like Mr Hogg to snob a position it deserves what it gets, viz., the oor.tempt of right-thinking men, The misconduotof Mr Hogg is the misconduct of the Government which is responsible for bis presence at the Land Board.
