At ihe Police Court to-day, Catherine Clifford, said to be the wife of the Hon, W, Clifford, formerly a runholder, Marlborough, was charged with stealing a diamond ring, valued at £ls, andildin rnonoy at Groymouth, Accused pleaded guilty, and her solicitor mado an appeal to tho Bench, pointing out tlmt she had come to the Colony to visit lior parents, and whon on the eve of leaving the Colony she succumbed to temptation placed in her way, It was a fit case for tho Probation Act, but if she wore placed under probation she would liavo to remain in tho Colony, which would be the worst thing that could happen to her. Tho two J.P.'s convicted the accused, and oidered her to come up for sentence when called on.
