The Surveyor-General wroto informing'the Council that the Ngawatawa Koad had been gazetted. From the Audit Department. stating that the auditor would attend to audit the Borough accounts as early as possible.
The Masterton Municipal Fire Brigade wrote asking payment for three members of the Brigade who had watched the fire at Mr 0. T. Ntttunoh'B house for a day after the conflagration. Mr G. W. Woodrooffe wrote, informing the Council that the drinking fountain was now finished and asking a donation of £4lss Cd jjjpako U P the amount of £SO to pasJra oontractor, the balance having' been subscribed.
MrF, Holloway wrote, stating that he intended applying for a slaughterhouse license at the next meeting of the Wairarapa North County Counoil. The Clerk of the Wellington City Counoil wrote, requesting that a member of the Counoil be appointed to attend a meeting in Wellington to decide what should be done with #£•*> ence to the Atkinson Memorial, §K The Volunteer Fire warded a request'thatthe Council fbV fil its promise to repair the run ou*' from the Station, and asking for books and papers for the Fire Brigade Library. EE3OWJTIONS. It was deoided to refer the Fire 'Brigades request for books to the Library Committee. Mr Holloway'B letter re slaughterhouse license was referred to tho Inspector of Nuisances, The request of Mr G. W. Wood-, rooife for a subscription towards the new drinking fountain was next considered. , Or Feist thought it would not be asking the Counoil too much to grant the £4 asked. The fountain would be a standing and lasting monument in the town, Cr Dixon seconded the motion. Cr Heron wished to know under what heading the payment could be made. The Mayor did not think the auditor would approve the payment. There was no bead in the Act under whioh it would oome. Cr Cullen asked if the Council was going to vote a sum to be expended in something over which they had no control. Cr Hessey said he should certainly vote against the motion. Iyjk* understood they were not to bo alfcjcl for a sixpence. % _ Cr Feist said ho saw that the Council was not in favour of his motion. He understood that tho Council had quite agreed to take over the work, and therefore would be in a position to overlook the expenditure. He thought it was a perfectly legitimate expenditure. ' On the ayes and, noes being taken, Crs Dixoii and Feist voted for the motion, and the rest of the Councillors voting against it, it was declared lostORDINARY BUSINESS. Cr Cullen drew attention to the fact that horees were continuously allowed to stray in Bannister Street, and said he had seen droves of ten driven along without a man at the head of them. The Mayor said that no doubt a breach of the by-law was being committed. Young children were placed in great danger by horses being driven at all hours, The Town Clerk said that the Bylaw was imperfect, As it now read the driver was liable, Small boys were sent out with the horses whom the Inspeotor could not proseouto. The Mayor moved that the ownora of lbs horses be warned that unless they discontinued creating the breaoh of tho By-law a prosooution would be made at once, The motion was carried.
