THE TAUHERENIKAU RACECOURSE.
The Recent Improvements. (By .Our Ow Correspondent), ■■ A» tbe last annual meeting of tie W.R.C. it was decided to have the Tauherenikau racecourse improved. improvements were to be effected as .much as possible, before the 2nd of January, 1893, in readiness for tha T Bummer Meeting. '' r The course itself is fenced, and the distances are marked, and an awk« ward corner has been remedied, ■ " On the upper side of .the Tauberenikau bridge protection works are being constructed, to the erection o£ whioh the W.R.0., the Featherston J Koad Board, and; the : owner of the adjoining property, are contributing; 11 u 6 -l atfis ® re now situated near ■ the bridge, and the rmid to the grand stand goin.round outside the 'course and not across it as formerly. The grand stand- has also been considerably..■altered in-.appearance. The roof bag |, een raised four feet and exlen ™ ove . r the, weighing room, etc. The grand: stand is sixty feet ■ long by!twenty-five, wide,, and : is OHpable of holding between 400 and ' 600 people, in front of the stand is a balcony which will accommodate a , hundred or bo more,. Prom eaolvend of the balcony the lawn is reached by a wide stairway.- A stair/also -leads from the stand to the ladies' rooms A below. On the ground floor,' in the'™ centre is a couiinodious refreshment room. On one side of- this; are the ladiea room ami ihe ladies tea roon., On the other side are the stewards luncheon room, the presi-roomj arid thegraud stand bar storeroom, Under & lean-to at the rear .of the building are the bar, the pantry,.and tho kitchen. •
The lawn has been extended to about three times its original size. Thw alteration has 1 necessitated the shifting ot the. totalisator house. The saddling paddock has also been en" larged and the. jookeys room shifted back. In the corner of tho saddling paddock next the judge's box there has been . erected a steward's ;anct weighing room with a Btand for, the stewards. b V* publican's j into a refreshment booth, to which a | kitchen and fruit stall have beenadded. Between tho refreshment room and the totalisator house is the people's. / stand in the lower poriion of which is >| situated .tho publican's booth! The people's stand, whioh is oapable of holding or 800 people is reaobed by a stairway from the side. Behind tho lawn is a large enolosura for tho vehioles of members', At the rearot this paddock is another/for tho horses, Tho work lias been oarried oat in i very efficient manner by Mr A, Don» aid, the contractor, with Mr J, Robertson as olerk of the works. The grand stand is situated at the edge of a very pretty piece of bush very suitable for pionic purpose! and there iB no doubt many will take their families with them on account of this.
