Wellington, Thursday. Tho Oddfellows' Hall at tho Lower Hutt was insured for £I2OO in the Commercial' Union. Tho building and contents we.re valued at £I6OO, Mr Burt valued bis buildings at £2OOO, »od stock at £2OOO, but had not a penny of insurance on either. About twelve monlbß ago he let his policies lapse, preferring to take bis own risk, Tho fire broke out in a dwelling house adjoining tho store and tho inmates, of whom there were a large number, had a narrow escape. Mr Burt thinks tho outbreak was caused by rats eating matches, as a large quantity of mntohes wero stored in the room in winch the fire is supposed to have started The Huit bridge was on fire several times, hut the Fire Brigade stopped the flames before niuoh danuee was done, Most of the furniture in the family hotel was removed, but the fire did not obtain hold on the building, whioh is onlysoorched, The proprietor estimates his loss at £250. The insurance on the family Hotel are as follows: —Building, £IOOO in Commercial Union; furniture, £4OO in the Alliance; daughter's furniture, £260 in the Economio; stook £IOO in the Economio
