FIRE AT THE HUTT.

Serious Damage. Shortly after midnight last night a fire broke out at the Hutt, whioh resulted in very serious damage being done, Mr Burt's store, in which the fire started, waa totally destroyed, as was also the Oddfellows' Hall. The Family Hotel was also attacked by the flames, and tho building and its contents were very seriously damaged by fire and water before the conflagration was qnelled. Mr Burt's store and stook wore, it is said, uninsured, and tho unfortunate owner estimates his loss at £4OOO. ■ The amount of insurance on the Oddfellows' Hall is not yet known, The Petone Five Brigade arrived on the scene soon alter the flamos had reached the hotel, and by dint of splendid work succeeded in. putting a stop to what was a very serious fire, The greatest credit is duo to the firemen for the way they worked. Dt Whitehead met with an unfortunate mishap, While ringing the fire bell tho supports gave way, and the bell fell, striking the doctor's head, and inflicting a somewhat severe scalp wound. We are glad to hear, however, that the doctor will not bo laid up, although ho bad a very narrow escape of being killed. The reflection of the fire waa very plainly seen in Wellington, and it waa evident that the conflagration was of an extensive and eurions oharaotor.— Times.
