Wairarapa Daily Times [ESTABLISHED 1878]

FRIDAY, DECEMBER 23, 1892.

Beino tub extended title or tub Wairaraka Daily, with which it is identical

Tuere has been surprisingly small comment in the Colony upon the recent appointments of Justices of tho Peace, Two hundred new names have been added to a roll which was already overstuffed and the press of the Colony is all but silent, and neither blames nor praises. The Canterbury organ of the Ministry has however endeavoured to justify the action of the Government so that Ministers have at least one influential journal to defend them. The following, quoted from our southern contemporary, is practically all that is to bo said in their favour-;

But in the Colony we can nevorthelefß accept the great principle that there must bo on the Bench of justico thatsympathy for the fooling 9 of ever; class which is born of familiarity and trained up in knowledge, As to litness-ElihuEurrott was a blacksmith, Burns was a plough: man, Hogg waa a shopherd and Justico Shallow was a man of property. There is fitness, of course, and it rests with Governments to find it. The present Government lias not neglected that plain duty. We congratulate the administration upon its appointments. At the same time wn venture to suggest'that tho ranks of the great unpaid are full enough for the present. We had been under the impression that justice was cold, stern, and unsympathetic, that it was no respector of perpons, and that anyone called upop to administer it was bound to do bo by path impartially ant} without fear or favour. ■ Justico baß been do* fined as tho doing of that which is just and right " though the heavens fall." The Goddess of. Justice was, in old times, dopictod as blind, holding a pair of softies evenly; but it has remained for tho present Ministry to fashion a .new Goddess; with one oye open and tho other shut, holding scales which cannot possibly bo made to balance, Suitors aro no longer to approach a Benoli of Justices with the expectation of obtaining bare undiluted jusItice, but with the idea of evoking ' sympathy. Opr contemporary, which is supposed to enjoy direct Ministerial inspiration, givos us tho koynote to much that has perplexed many people. '.'Sympathy" explains away, all the queer judgments we have j)eeji wont to get from Justices in .thjs town. We begin to perceive that under th© pew order of things Justioes are uiis-. cjlled, 'lts w adwiuist-tatora si

the Jaw should be named sympathetic? or impressionista. ! Tliey will sit on the Bench with a tear ia their eye and a jiockot handkerchief in their hands, and tlio suitor who starts the tear on its journey down the nasal or'gan of the Impressionist of the Peace, will win bis case, Justice is done [ away, worn out, effete. The Socialists of New Zealand supersede it with SJtupathy.
