Eumours were current in London on the 12tli, that Lord Roseberry and Princess Victoria, eldest unmarried daughter of the Prince of Wales, are betrothed, In n letter to Lord Mayor Knill, declining to attend tho Guild-Hall banquet, the Hon. W, E. Gladstone said he declined to attend at all public dinnoia by advice of his physician, at the same lime he complimented the Lord Mayor for tho manner in which he had sustained the principle of religious freedom. The refusal of leading British ministers to attend this banquet is interpreted to mean an indication of attack on the corporation of tho City of Loudon, which is believed will be superseded in the administration of its functions by tho London County Council, Prince George, heir apparent, will marry Princess May, during May, 1893, probably at Westminster, and tho occasiou will be made a grand national felt. Lord Mayor Knill will bo made baronet, and his two sheriffs will be knighted, The managers of tho Electric Apparatus Company recently made an experiment at Earl's Court, London, and succeeded in throwing distinct forms of gigantic lettors on tho clouds as well as making the features of Mr Gladstone appear in ghostly outline in the heavens. A dospa'ch from Monte Carlo says, that among the well-known persons who have made money at the tables, during the past week, were the Earl of Cloncarty and his wife, formerly " Belle "Billon. The Duko of Portland in a letter to his tenants, announcing his intention to sell his land, does not hesitate to say that the depression in agricultural industry is duo to tho free importation of produce.
