Captain Crutohley in Defence i ofFinley. (By Tolegrapb.—Press Aeeociation.) Wblunoton, Monday, Captain Crutchley, of tlie R.M.S, Kaikoura, in a letter commenting on Finley's trial, complain* that the police in Wellington do not look after rowdy Bailors properly, and will not take them in custody unless information is first laid, He gives instanoeß from bis own experience, and says tliat in consequence he gave orders to his officers to protect theinsolves In future. He pleads for mitigation in Finloy's sentence on.the.ground tbat he had no intention of killing Greenrose and was only defending himself from serious injury. Captain Cratchley, however, overlooks the wilful shooting at Lynch and others after the firat affray, which no doubt influenced the jury in their verdict.
