Wellington, Monday. FALSE I'BETENCES, Henry Smith alias Clark, pleaded Guilty lo charges of having obtained the 6um of £6 from J. L. Murray, and the 6um of £l2 from Orlando Pragnell, in each caso at Masterton, by means of falso pretcucos. The prisoner handed to his Honor a written statement, to tho offeot that jfe had been compelled through poverty to raise the monoy in tho manner set out in tho indictment, His Honour pointed out that the prisoner had served a sentence in tho South. Mr Gamy, Governor of tho Wellington Gaol, iuformed tho Court that the prisoner, who was an engineer, had behaved while in prison in ao ' exemplary manner, and had dono his work remarkably well. His Honor said ho could not over' look the fact that the man had passed more that' one chequo. Prisoner had received 18 ulontlis for and entering, and 12 montbs for larceny, and yet lie had not taken warning. Prisoner said there was great depression in his trado, and he h«d not been able to follow his trado in consequence. Hia Honor sentenced the prisoner lo 18 months imprisonment on eaoh charge, tho sentences to run concurrently. IDE woodville sensation. I In tho case of Wm. Syms, charged toith attempting to procure abortion, 4Er Edwards, who appeared for the accused, applied for a special jury on •tho ground that there would be a good deal of medical evidence of a technical character with which a common jury would not ha so competent to deal as a special jury, He also asked for a postponement of the case till next week in order to admit of tho attendance of Dr. l)e Lisle, who is at present attending tho criminal aeesioiiß in Auckland. Tho calender consisted of fif cell cases, the most serious being an aliened attempt to procure abortion, and a Maori case ot wounding with intout.
Richard John Ponvce,oti twocharges of indecent on two little girls, was sentenced to fonrycars' imprisonment on each oliargo, the sentences to run concurrently. Later. At the criminal seessions of tho Supremo Court to-day, Olias. Tuck, for embezzlement from the County Council, was sentenced to two years' imprisonment with hard labour. An old offender, named Michael llyan, was sentenced to two years with hard labour, for on assault on ex-detective Hughes, Dunedijj, November 28. Tho criminal calendar contains only four cases against three prisoners, Blenheim, November 28. An interesting case to flaxmillers occupied tho Supreme Court all the day, the action being for £6OO, for alleged negligence on the part of defendant re. his scutching machine, whereby one of tbo hands lost his life, Tho plaintiff's name is Hanso, and be is the deceased's father, The defendant is Thomas Carter, a wellknown run-holder. A number of nonsuit points raised will bo decided in the morning before tbe defendant's case opons. 'l'he oase will probably last all day.
