Tennyson Smith at Featherston, fl)y Telegraph.—Own Correspondent) Fjjatherstoh, Wednesday. Tho people of Featherston had a great literary treat last night, when Mr E. Tennyson Smith, in the Oddfollows 1 Hall, gave his recital of J, J3. Cough's oration, "For tlio Sake of Others," It is ceriain no such powerful and eloquentppeaker has ever been heard here before. He seemed to convulse his audience with laughter or move them to tears at will. Mr Coleman Phillips, who presided, said he had paid over £40,000 in wages, and stated half had been spent in drink. A lively incident occurred at the close of the lecture, whon Mr Butoher, editor of " The Badical," challenged some of the lecturer's statements, The lecturer invited him to come on theplatformand express his.viows, He replied that he was not pre" pared but would do so to-night, Mr Tennyson Smith then announced that he would be compelled logo through the enteitainmont as advertised, which would occupy two hours, but at the close he would welcome bis opponent on the platform, so that a lively time may be expected, The pledge table was crowded and hearty applause greeted several woll known persons as thoy went forward to sign the pledge.
