As showing how insanitary banlc notes become in circulation, remarks a contemporary, and how dangerous thoy are lin conveying the germs ohdiscase, two medical men, who examined two of these notes, report they contained, it was estimated, between nineteen and twenty thousand microbes. Cultures were made from the sorapiuga of these notes, and these were injected into the peritoneal cavity of rats and guinea pigs, mo6fc of which died within twenty-four hours, the post mortem examination revealing signs of peritonitis and congestion of the liver and kidneys.

Bather a rich incident was mentioned at the Land Board (says the Napier Telegraph) when Chief Commissioner Humphries' stated that he visited Patutahi, Poverty Bay, the other day, and was surprised to notice that a great deal of Crown land had been fenced grassed and oropped, There were nineteen aores there in the centre of the township, valued at £3O, whioh had been taken possession of and fenced in over twelve years ago, and the occupiers bad never paid a shilling to the Government, One settler who has a splendid crop down, was asked what he meant by doing such a thing, and he replied that everyone fenced in Crown land up that way, and he didn't see why he should not do the same. The Land Board will have these properties for sale shortly. • To the list of peers in business may be added the name; of Lordfiowton, who is starting as the keeper of a common lodging house near the Yauxliall Kailway Station. Although Rowton House, as it is called, is to be registered as a common lodging house, it will be found a most uncommon lodging house, for Lord'Rowton will provide single working men with bedroom, kitchen, diniug-rooui, reading room, library, lavatory—the run of the bouse, in fact, for sixpence a night. Meals will be served on the premises, and if Kowtou House pays its way, it is intended to build other house's of the same kind in .different parts of London.

Tho charming way in which she mounted and dismounted tbe bicyole, and the ease with which she managed her maohine, "The Reform," a Coventry make, was the subject of favourable comment all along the line of parade, Miss Mitchell, who taught herself to ride' some four months ago informs mo that before taking to oyoling her health was not of tbe best. In fact tho machine was bought by her father mainly as a means' to the enjoyment of better health for his daughter. Miss Mitchell has ridden from Gore to Otama. and back, a distance of twenty-four miles of indifferent road, in four hours, and felt not at all tired after the journoy; and her little deter, a girl of only thirteen years of age, with a little help, became so accustomed to the maohine that she now rides it with perfeot safety, ' '
