To-day Messrs P. H. Wood and W. Udy were respectively nominated candidates (or the honourable office of Mayor of Greytown,' and on Wednesday, 80th November, the election takes place. There should be no uncertainty about tbe result. Municipal matters in Greytowu, especially as regards finance, are in a condition which renders careful managemenb imperative, and in nhioh the judgment and administrative ability of an experienced business man. will be invaluable. Possibly an increased rate may be needed. If affairs be capably handled, a moderate demand will meet the requirement, and under capable guidance things corporate in Greytown will not only regain a healthy prosperity but will mate progress. But let any inexperienced aspirant for municipal honours have sway, who neither comprehends what is required of the leader of the Counoil, nor has the power to control and direct those around him in their judgments, and things will speedily get from critical to bad, and from bad to worse, till at last a very heavy taxation, indeed, will, be needed to pull things together, and undo tbe mischief which inoapa city has wrought.
_ Let us briefly review the qualifications of the two candidates for office. Take Mr F. H, Wood first, He is a resident: of eighteen years standing, and is one of the largest ratepayers in Greytownllio latter is euroly an incentive to careful administration of tbaßorough's concerns, Then, too, besides identifying himßelf with every progressive movement in Greytown for years past, being in many cases, indeed, the promoter of ttie advances made, MrWood has already served his apprenticeship to municipal government, and the term of five years during which he ! held office as Mayor was characterised by a most satisfactory experience in every way, and the Borough financeswere left in a thoroughly healthy state when office was vaoated. Now, to refer.to Mr William Ud) 's qualifications. These need very little detail, for those we are aware of are mainly of a negative character, To start with, lie does not liye in the Borough, nor does he own any property in it, except that he has a common interest in a bequeathed estate, for which he is a trustee. Then as to business capaoity—well, Mr Udy is a farmer. Our farmers arean estimable body of men, and we are indebted to them in very many ways, but we do not look for business experience among them, nor do they as a rule profess to have it, Yet that endowment is invaluable in a Mayor, and Mr Udy—certainly on his own estimation • of bimself-for no one, so far as we are aware, requisitioned him to stand—has chosen to offer his services and acquirements to the burgesses of Greytown. There should, not, be a moment's hesitation in bestowing a vote at the election, Mr P. fl, Wood is preeminently fitted for the occupation of the mayoral chair, and the residents of Greytown are fortunate in gaining his ultimate favourable response to the numerously-signed petition pre* : seated to him. He should be elected twice over, Indeed, the only rißk he runs is in the over-confidence of those who are supporting hirn. They should not let their faith in their man prevent them from polling every sh> glo vote available, Let them do this, and we, shall see Mr Wood head and shoulders above his opponent, a position his exertional fitness for I munioipal control entitles him to, 'Tier* is one eharaotwißtio of Mr
Wood,we overlooked, He never neglects.business, and the Corporaaffairs would be as oarefullr attonded to aa would his own. it seems a bold assertion to make, but we could alojqat swear from our knowledge of-Mr Wood and from a remark wo hoard made at the time, that during liw term of mayoralty in Gfeytowni on aprevioM occasion be didnotmisß a single meeting of the Counoil, nor was he ever away from a Committee meeting of any kind.
