A COALMINE ON FIRE.

(By Telegraph.—Press Association,

The Coalpit Heath mine, hear Brunnerton, took fire on Tuesday night,

Later Partieulais, Brunnerton, Thursday. Tho Greymouth Fire Brigudo, with their new engine, did grand work. Two lines of hose were run to the burning shaft, one being taken into the mine by way of the drive, in charge of firemen. The water supply was splendid, The men stuck to their work gamely, following the fire in the drives, and were ably socouded by the mine men with two manual engines, until tho volume of wator began to have an effect, It iB not known how the fire started, but it is thought that it tiegan on the edgo of the shaft, where the pumping ongines aro stationed. The fire is now practically out. The engines worked all night, and are still working this morning to make tho extinction sure, The damage.cannot yet bo estimated, but it will be considerable, The mine belongs to the Grey Valley Coal Company, and was bought by them from Joseph Taylor some years ago. The upper levels are well worked, but the dip, oalled Kimberley, contains a most valuable seam of coal, and is practically umiorked. The manager takes immediate measures to ascertain the extent of the damage, and such other steps as may be found necessary to enable an early start to be made. It is without doubt) that if it had not been for the new engine of the Greymouth Fire Brigado, the mino would have been burning now and practically lost,
