MASTERTON.—SATURDAY. (Before Colonel Roberts, R.M.) FAME PRETENCES. H. Smith with several aliases was charged by the police on the information of Mr 0. Pragnell with obtaining goods and money to tho vtiluo of £l2 by moans of a valueless cheque, Orlando Pragnell, draper, in tho employ of the Wholesale Drapery Company, of Mastertou, recollooted < the accused as the man who came to the W.D. Company's shop in Queen- : street, between fix and seven o'clock on the evening of the 22nd and msde purchases to the extent of £5 2s 6d, in payment of which he tendered a cheque for il2, stating that it was hiß own and did not require endorsing. The cheque was duly presented iJor payment, and returned marked account," Believed from what the man said tho oleque was a good , one. The sum in cash given in change was £olßs, The cheque produced was the one' given bim by accused. \ Edward O. Turner, clerk at the Masterton branoh of the Bank of New Zealand, gave evidence to tho effect that he had reoeived the cheque produced through the Bank of New Sotith Wales. The person ■ whoso nanie was on the oheque had no account at the Bank. Charles A. Tabuteau, manager of the Ejank of New South Wales at remembered the cheque produced being paid into the Wholesale Drapery Company's account, and on presentation to the Bank of New Zealand, being returned dishonoured. ThisWosed the case for the prosecution. \ His Worship then cautioned the prisoner, who elected to reserve his defence, and lie wsb committed for trial K ; fc the next sitting of the C/ourt at Wellington on 28th | November.. A second oharge on the information of Henry \MoArdle, Sergeant of Police, in which Smith was charged with obtaining goods under faluo pretences from J. L. Murray; was then heard/ T/ Hi Thompson, saddler, of Maslerton, deposed to giving the accused a blank cheque from his bopk. At tho request of accused he went with him to have a drink after giving him the cheque. Accused reoiarked when drinking" Bore's good |uck to the patent," / J. L, Murray, draper, of MasterI ton, remembered the acouaed coming ; to bis shop on the 22nd instant and | making certain purchases to the f amount of lis at his shop. Payment I was made by a cheque for, £6. Change j was given by a oheqno for £4 19s | and 10s in silver, Accused had' > stated that the cheque tendered, ' which was signed W. Clark, was his own. When duly presented and paid his banking account the oheque Wm dishonored, C, A, Tabuteau gave evidence that the cheque produced, signed " W. < Clark," m paid into Mr Murray's account on the 24th of October and returned, as no person of that name had an account at bis bank, George B, Taylor, acoountant in the employ ol the WairarapaFarmers' Co operative Association, recollected the acoused presenting a cheque to him on Saturday, the 22nd inst,, for M 19s. He requested the accused to endorse the cheque after which he cashed it. The acoused was then committed for trial on this charge.
