It is seldom tbat a cablegram is so weirdly siigqeetive as the followiug message from Lord Bipon to the Governor of New Zealand :~ "Ihave carefully considered jour despatch, and appreciate the difficulties of your position, but I have no hesitation in Advising acceptance of your responsible advisors' advice. It does not appsar to bo a case of wampini! the Council. Division lists should be considered rather than politics, Of the Premier's originally nominating members, I will state full; reasons by despatch, but you should at once re-open matter with Ministers, and waive your objections to thoir proposal, Agent-General is anxious for information, which I cannot withold after tomorrow, but I am anxious to give you opportunity of making your own announcer ment to tho Ministers,"
We can almost imagine the noble Marquis who rules the Colonies seated in his office reading the morning paper, and his private Secretary coming in, Baying, " My Lord, tho Agent-General lor New.Zealand is here again, and wants to know-—," Then His Lordship stops him impatiently with "Hang the AgentGeneral I"—for has not he been bothered a good deal by this pertinacious visitor, and has he not a feeling that he is being driven into a corner which heroes not. like, Though a Liberal lie is a gentleman, and has a sympathetic feeling with Lord Glasgow. He. knows that had he been in the same position in which Lord Glasgow was placed he would have acted in a precisely similar manner, but still he has to slate him, Have not the New Zealand Liberals been buttering up tho G.O.M. with congratulatory cables, and here was their agent in the next room demanding payment for them. The payment must bB made, but ho would see the Agent-Goneral" blessed" before he would tell him this without giving Earl Glasgow that friendlyintimation due from one man oi honour to another. So ho cabled word for. Lord Glasgow to put things straight with his Ministry before the Agent-General could put his friiohdly spoke into the affair. Lord Bipon Ji.aj} to ,do a nasty thing, but he did it in a nice manner, and probably finished up by sending word to the Agent-General that if be Galled in the next afternoon be would get what he wanted. Of course, twentyfour hours later Mr Perceval obtained the straight tjp» & n d seßt a mu ?' l stronger message than the actual circumstances of the case, warranted. There is one comfort in this little affair, and this lies in the fact tbat 'the man whom Lord Bipon has really snubbed is Lord Onslow. JJow, this latter nobleman is not exactly of the satne mould as Lords Ripon andi Glasgow, there is not quite so much of the true nobility about hinvbut he | is exceedingly sharp arid wide awake. When he comes to know that he| is considered by;the powers that be to have misled Lord Glasgow, he will probably make WW? ovef the
matter—a great deal of trouble. Of course, as we said before, this is a great constitutional question which lias been settled on strict constitutional lines, but for all that there will be " wigs on die green," both here, and in England before the issue is accepted in that calm, contented manner in which great constitutional decisions Bhould be received.

The judgment in theoaso McCardle Junr., v. Land Board, read yesterday at the meeting of that body, arose out of i the refusal of the Board to grant plaintiff a title to his land after the statutory term of occupation, on the ground of nonresidence. The Board, after its refusal, discovered that it was. not justified in withholding the title, but the parties agreed that a ruling of a Judge of the Supreme Court should bo obtained, and a caso was accordingly stated, and the judgment was to the effect that he was entitled to his grant, having effected his improvements and been exempted from residence. Several other cases of a similar character were also dealt with m this judgment.—Press, The Rev. Father McKenna, says the Pahiatua Star, was subpnaed on Tuesday as a witness at the R.M. Stevenson, and on its termination the question of his expenses had to be considered in making up the costs of the suit, One of the solicitors thereupon approached the Rev. gentleman and inquired what amount he intended to claim; but ho was told that no expenses would be asked for. "The value of my professional services," said the Rev, Father, with a bland Bmile, "havo not yet been fixed by any Court and therefore I shall not ask this Court to fix it." This was the only pleasant incident of a long dreary day.
A mraBMNO YERMCT.-Speaking ol uno of the most noted of coloniuf specialities, tho press says:—"Sharland's Baking Powdor dosorvca more than a passing notice, for the "Moa" Brand Baking Powdor enjoys a reputation second to none. From ono end of New Zealand to tho other, large orders aro received for this popular brand. Even in the most out of tho way districto tho careful house-wife, possessed with tho laudable ambition to make her bread and her scones better than her neighbours', buys Sharland's Baking Powder, and triumphs over the few of her less sensible sisters, who, from a mistaken sense of economy, buy apparently cheaper brands, The recipe of a good Baking Powder is anything but a secret; but how very fow manufacturers ÜBe, as Moaara Sharland is Co, do, the boat only of materials, carefully tested before mixture and exactly proportioned," loaders, who require an economical satisfactory and healthful Baking Fow der, cannot do better than use the ' Moa" brand.-AnvT
