Proceedings at Woodvifa [By Telegraph. —Press Association,] Woodville, Thursday. The information hud by Dr. Davenport against William Syms, J.P., ohr.mist, was heard to-day before Mr JTurubull, R.M., Mr Baker for tho informant, and Mr Edwards for tho accused, In opening the case for the informant, Mr Baker explained that circumstances rendered it necessary and the duty of the informant to lay an information, and said that it was proposed to call evidence to show that tho accused performed an illegal operation upon Elizabeth Hall.
Mr Baker stated that Mrs Hall had asked the accused who was tho best doctor, and he told her neither was much account, and proposed to treat her himself. He had interviews with her several times, and used precautions to prevent pregnancy. As a result, however, irregularity set in, and he proposed to show that the accused gavo medicine and used an instrument resulting in miscarriage. Medical evidence would show this.
Elizabeth Hall was called, and His Worship advised her that if asked any questions tending to criminate her, she need not answer them, MiBaker protested that this intimation was calculated to prejudice the interests of justice; Mr Edwardß, on the other hand, contended that she should be fully warned of her position as a witness in the case now proceeding.
