FOOTBALL.

[By Diogenes,] (Special Telegram.) Wellington, Saturday. The Wellington Juniors beat Manawatu Juniors by ten points to nil, Dunedin, Saturday. The Canterbury Representative team were victorious in their match with Otago, winning by seven points to four,

The football season in the Wairarapa lias practically closed, although one or two more matches are yet on tha tapis, As far as the district is concerned the game has not been such a success as in former years,' and I think the Union is somewhat to blame lor this failure. Grey town, formerly onoof the best football places in the province, could not get together a senior team this year, and even when amalgamated with Carterton, the members of the team had no energy about them, and what promised to bo a very successful Olub at tho commencement of the season was allowed to collapse for want ofsuppott,

The Masterton team—no doubt one of the finest in the (Jolouy—spoiled their reputation by touring the South Island before they were ready, and sustained a severe defeat at the bands of tho Albambras, This defeat would not have bad suob n disheartening effect upon the players generally if the match bad been played first, when all the team waß available, and in a good condition. Of course, the Masterton team won the Bugby Union's Cup rather easily, owing to the disinterestedness of the. Lower Valley people, and if it had not been for the game stand made by the Red Stars, enthusiasts would not have seen any matches at all.

The Red Stars commenced the st&i son very badly, and when the first Cup Match wis played at Carterton, only nine or ten members of the team turned up, thereby practically losing their chance of the Cup, owing to the non-attendance of picked men, Later on, however, they pulled themselves together, and although luck was certainly against them, they made oven the Masterton team a bit uneasy, and if the final for the Cup bad boen played, would have made things very merry.

Junior football was far more interesting during the sfasou than Senior, the playera as a rule putting more heart into the work, and some very exciting games were witnessed, Six teams entered at the commencement for the Cup contest, viz,, Masterton 2nd, Greytown 2nd, Fire Brigade, Pirates, Bed Star 2nd, and Muugarakei Rovers, but the majority were extremely short lived, After one defeat, three of tho teams backed out and the final round was left between the Fire Brigade, Bed Stars and Masterton, the latter coming outon top. Credit cannot be given to the Masterton Club for winning the Junior Cup, as it was not won on their laurels, The Te Ore Ore Natives, last year a senior team, joined (?) the club, and played throughout the season for the second. Of course the result was never in doubt, as besides having senior men in their ranks, they played, when they liked, a brutal game—so rough in fact that several old players absolutely declined to play with them-and the team which fought against them so gamely to the end oougb to be complimented on their pluck.

I must not conclude without making some comment in reference to the Junior Clubs in the district, namely, the Orientals, Hard Cases, and Boyai Stars. They are indeed three smart little teams in the different towns, and several of their players will no doubt be relegated to the Senior Clubs next season. I should like to see the Union give a cup for competition among the boys next year, for young and coming players 'should ceitainly have some encouragement.

Two new rules to come into forco next season are well worthy'of notice as they will'tend to materially alter the stylo of play of some of our men. Penalties are to be given—" When any player not in the scrummage wilfully obstructs bis opponent's halfbacks by standing on bis opponent's sidoofthe ball, when it is in the scrummage." Tbis ought to deal most effectually with the off-aide play, Another reads in reference to mauls; —" If the ball when over. the goal line, and in the possession of a player, bo fairly held by an opposing .player, itshall be scrummaged five yards from the goal line opposite tho spot where the ball is held."

The team to represent the second Red Stars against the Glreytown Fire Brigade next Saturday, aro revested to atones go into active training in view of the contest, All. those inen> bers unable to play are requested to inform the captain (Mr Bute'ment) as soon as possible. Back—Emmett; , three-qußrtsrj-Biohards, Jackson,

Pope ; halves—Hansen, Wrigley, HBwke; forwards—Wilsone, Morris, Hounslow, Butement, T. Wrigley, Boulcott, Kummer, Wellington; emergencies :—Blinkhorno, Webb, Bruuton, The team will leave Masterton at one o'olook on tho day of the i match,

Bush Rugby Union ut. Manawatu.

The Match between the Bush Bugby Union and the Manawatu Ooion resulted in a win for tho latter by 18 points to ml. The result was not unexpected as the Bush team lucked the combination their opponents displayed. Speed, Shannon, and Jewell were the sobrers for Manawatu, whilallc>Kenzie, Potts, and Pellmg played well for tho losing Bide,' ■
