THE "NATIONAL" ASSOCIATION.
A Manifesto. (Per Pres3 Association). Auckland, September 5. At a meeting of the National Association the Political Committee's report was adopted. The report deplores tbo introduction of a Labour Department Bill on the following grounds:—(a) That it is a further advance in the vicious system of Stale interference and Government by inspection ; (b) it will increase the burdens of both employers and employed, and consequently diminish the wageearuing power of the community; (c) it is ut /necessary to create such a department in this country, where the population is so exceedingly small and where the conditions are of such a character as to render it altogether unnecessary ;(d) it is objectionable on account of its voxatiously inquisitorial character and of-its tendency to create new offices,
As to tlio Secants' Registry Office Bill, the Bill appears to be wholly unnecessary, and seems to be founded upon the assumption tbat persons Seeking employment are incapable of guarding their own interests.
Tub following resolution was also passed :—The council of the National Association of New Zealand protest against tlio action of the Ministry in referring to the Secretary of State for the Colouies (he dispute between the Ministry and the Governor relative to tjie proposed additions to the Legislative Council, such reference tending to substitute nn appeal to the Colonial Office in place of the constitutional course of appealing to the people of the Colony.
