FOOTBALL.
[By Diogenes.] Wellington v, Waiuaiupa, Tho match bolween tho represonta tivesof the Wellington and Wai rarapa llugby Unions was played oi the Park Oval on Saturday, am resulted in a win for the city players after a hard-fought game, by twentj points (four goals) to four (two trie;)
Tho attendance ol the public was
. very largo, and great interest was manifested in the contest. The , Wellington representatives were . strong favourites from the | beginning, and their win wus therofore , not unexpected. The space at my disposal is limited to-day, and I cinnot therefore give the match the notice it deserves. The display of football, notwithstanding that the ground was in a slippory condition, was tho best ever made in. Masiorton, both sides doing their level best to win. Klliston skippered the blacks (Wellington), and M'Konzio the yellows (Waiwapa). Tho latter won the tees and look advantage of a strong wind which was blowing doivu tho field. The ball was sot in motion shortly after one o'clock, and from the outset the play became very fast. The Waii'arupa forwards got on a dashing forward rush and a packed scrummage took place near the opposing line, Harry Perry got possession, and by a dodgy run fell over tho line and drew Gist blood for Wairarapa amidst great cheering. E, Thompsontook the kick, which wasan easy one, but tho leather passed under the bar. Tho visitors then got ou a passing rush, and Gage made a good run, T. Thompson relieved the position by a judicious kick into touch. Shortly afterwards the yellows made another desperate rush and Wellington were forced. The play was some lime in tho visitors' territory, but hy good passing it was taken to the centre of the field. The blacks were awarded a penalty kick, which (hoy look full advantage of. The Wairarapa for-
wards, however, played with great determination, and tbo opposing backs could not withstand their rushes, After a loose scrum Gray made a fine run, and falling over the line scored a second try. It. Thompson again took the kick, which was a failure With the score at four to nil the Wellington boys pu'lwl themselves together and by some capital passing took the ball right down the field, The yellows were hard pressed for some time, but Watson kicked into touch and prevented a score, The blacks were awarded another penalty kick and made a deteimioed effort io score but their best attempts were frustrated by the opposing forwards. The play was pretty even for some time, when the Wairarapa forwards got on another rush and the blacks were forced. The result of combined back play was then seen, for the visitors ran from one end of the field to tbo other. A scrum took place in the Wairarapa twentyfives, when Cockroft made a neat run and passed to Bishop, who got over and drew first blood for Wellington, A pretty goal was placed by J. Campbell, who took the kick, Wairarapa had all the best of it daring tho remainder of thespell, but fate apppared to he against them ami they could not score.
At the beginning of the Becond spell Wairarapa were agaiu tlio aggressors, but the combination of the opposiug backs was too much for thorn. Gage made a good run, and kicked, when collared, Wairarapa being forced. Soon afterwards (bo Wairarapa goal lino was invaded, T, Welch relieving by kicking into touch. 'Campbell had a kick at goal from a penalty kick, but failed, aod Wairarapa was forced, Tho Yellow forwards then made a desperate rush nndlooked liko scoring, but Davidson, the Wellington back, marked on the goal lino and saved his team. Some givo and take play ensued, and T. Welch had an unsuccessful try at goal from a penalty kick. Again Wairarapa looked like scoring, a packed scrum taking place on the Wellington goal linoi but M'Kenzio messed things up by Posing to Gage, Play was taken within close proximity to the Wairarapa goal line, when J. Campbell got through the backs and hilling over the line I scored a second try for Wellington, He took the kick himself and placed another goal. Play had hardly resumed when Baker made a pretty run and registered still another try. The kick, which was taken by Campbell, waa again successful. With the score at fifteen to four the Wairarapa players went at it in earnest. Time after time they penned in their opponents, but could not score. M'Kenzie mado the run of the day and was collared on tho Wellington goal line, Tho blacks forced down and thus saved themselves, The play continued even until within a minute of the call of time, when some capital passing was put in by the Wellington baolfs, and Elliston got over fairly behind the posts. The kick by Campbell was again asuccess, and the game ended Wellington twenty points, Wairarapa four points,
Thero is no doubt but that tho best team won. Tho combination displayed in the back division of the visitors was really wonderful, The Wairarapa forwards were more than a match for their opponents, but their backs were weak, Tho absence of D'Arcy, who was suffering from an injury to his back and could not play, was keenly felt. The most prominent players for the victorswero Gago,Wynyard,Baker, J, Canipbell,Bißhop and Cockroft, and for tho vanquished H. Perry, Booth, Watson, Gray, Hudson, T. Welch and Malcolm,
Mr 0. A. Pownall acted as referee, and although his judgments were adversely commented upon by a certain section of players, his decisions generally were impartial, Messrs T.
