Wairarapa Daily Times. [ESTABLISHED 1878]

WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 31, 1892.

Being tub extbnded tiiib or the Waihaiiai'a Daily, with which it is lOENrIOAL.

■ Were a general election, by any mischance, to come about in this district within a short period,' the outlook would be altogether in favour of the Radicals.■. Their party is exceedingly well organised, and led ably by men like Messes Hogg, Pownall, and Gardiner, and it is not too much to say that this trio is a powerful combination in an election campaign. There are all sorts of rumours in the air. One is that/at the next election Mr Hogg will take a Wellington seat, Mr Pownall will contest Masterton, and Mr Gardiner stand for the Wairarapa electorate. We do not attach much importance to reports ofthis character, because the party leaders to whom we r«.-fer are unlikely to prematurely lay down a plan of campaign, or when thev have made their little arrangements to disclose them, for the benefit of their opponents; but we do believe that they will make a vigorous and sustained effort to carry botb seats, They are now probably quietly organising their followers for the tug-of-war which, soon or later, has to be encountered. On the side of (he settlers of this district who are wont to be called " Conservatives" by the oilier side, because they have a weak prejudice in favor of a freehold title and are not prepared to accept land nationalisation and socialism, there is absolutely no effective organisation. Tho party, too, is without a real leader either in the district or the colony. MrEolleston is an amiable and exemplary chief, but be is deficient in certain qualities ! essential for successful leadership, and , a stronger man than he is needed at ,

tho head of the party, In this electorate we are leaderlesa. {Some people inquire whether Mr 6, Ueethnm will

itand again, and no doubt if a strong ■pquisjtion were made for birn to do so

might again come forward, but tbe

real question is whether he is the strongest candidate available, We should be inexpressibly happy to seo him once inoro tho M.H.R. for this

district] but we should bo inexpressibly miserable to see him beaten at the post. As a non-resident he is heavily handicapped,'and utileas it is pretty gertain that he would receivs the suppflft of tjip sutlers in tho electorate,

it would |)e a p|Btiike to ask him to st&nd op for him to accept tnp inyitatjonifpne wpro given, The duty'of uHlIm js to put fljippr personal 'pop-aidei-ationeoii orgeside anil totJefcrjufiie

tbe selection of the strongest candidate procurable to enter the lists against Mr Hogg or any ollny candidate wlic may be chosen on tlie other side, Tlit leader selected will Lave a stiff battlf lo light, and unless he is properlj backed up by settlers in all parts o the district lie will hare a poor cbanci of success, The old style ofelec tjpnpejrjng is a thing of the past, am t)ie (text pappaign, jylm j' ponjee must |)g forked out oil r.psy lines.' I the settlers party vajies up aftpr tbi evont to find itself defeated it will bi because it isneglecting at the preeen time opportunities for organisinj which will not occur again, Troops h the heat of a fray cannot be disciplined The preliminary training essential ti victory must precede the encounter The duty of settlers throughout th Wairarapa is clearly to combine to re turn two members who willworthil; represent their interests. We hay every respect for the ability and in jtelligence of some of tbe men wh hay,e,clim|bed_to pep and power on th' jyprjking jnap'p sfioulfjef, fjjft ff j absuf/J t ( Q pretend i|/at tliey repfesen >he prodi|cefa pf Np\« \V hope tjiat the settles of (ho Mjister ton eleotoraie will be able to find | candidate .strong enough to lead then to victory,

Party spirit has died out in Masterton municipal . matters, the annual election results in a "walk over" for two good men,-Messrs Feist and Ht'saey, and wo am quite content tliat for a time there should be a lull to allow old differences to be forgotten and former enmitirs to die out, Mr Clapper, whose long and continuous services s to the town gave liim a stronger claim to an unopposed return, is less fortunate, being challenged by Mr Cullen, No doubt the latter will in due time state his reasons for endeavouring to displace a veteran of Mr Clapper's calibre. Most people are disposed to believe, even though they differ with Mr Gapper on some points, that ha is and has been for many long years one of the most usev ful members of our Munioipal Council, and without him it would be very incomploto,

The overdraft of the Masterton Eorou»li Council is now only £389. Mr William Cross, of Flat Bush, Aliredton, notifies that any person found trespassing on his property, or removing cattle off the same, will be prußeouted, M. de Moy, instructor in calisthenio exercises to the Wellington Education Board, is now on a periodical visit to the Wairarapa, The Pahiatua Jockey Club is now on a firm footing. Debentures to the value of over £2OO have already been applied for. ■ A list of goods just landed by • the Wairarapa Farmers' Co-operative Aisodiation, including fifteen different descriptions of cooking stoves, is published in another column. Tho following tenders wore receivod last nijjht by the Masterton Borough Council for thirty chains of formation in West Bush road:—James Bentley, £BS (accepted); J, Cavanagh and Co., ±'Bs; Jeremiah O'Keefc, £88; M. Korrins, 12 18s (id per chain; A. Tinsley, 100; P, MoJcahy, £lls 10a; James Walsh, £4 2s per chain; Johu completed by January Ist.

Tjue Bills have been found in the Supreme Court against Charles H. Campbell, alias Loive, and Thomas Tait, both late of Masterton.

A lecture to ladios only was given in the Masterton Theatre Royal yesterday aftornoon by Mrs N. Dick, who is connected with Professor Mason's company. There was a fairly good attendance, and much interest was taken in the disserfcation of tho lady lecturer, who tendered most important advice to mothers and daughters.

! An entertainment In aid of St. Matthew's Choir Fund is to bo held in tho Schoolroom on Friday evening next. The programme will be a particularly attractive one.

An important operation was performed in the Masterton Hospital yesterday b.r Dr Hosking, assisted by Dr Cullins (of Wellington) and Dr Bey (of Greytown), when an ovarian tumour of long standing was removed from a young Native woman,

Mr Stanley, of the Dresden Piano Company, is now stiying at tho Olub Hotel, Mastertou, and la prepared to givo to any local resident particulars of the Tory liboral terms upon which his Company do business. The Dresdon Company has organised a time payment system which has in numberless instances been emphatically endorsed by tho public as thoroughly reasonable and satisfactory, There are, as is well-known, piano agonts about who are more dangerous than Picturesque Atlas fiends, and it is precisely because the Dresdon Company is a safe and trustworthy agency that wo willingly say a good word for it to our readers. Messages loft for Mr Stanley at Mr It. T. Holmes, will be duly responded to, or ho may be personally interviewed at his Hotel.

A Wellington firm is advertising fir five hundred cits for rabbit"catching purposes, A good haul should be made in Maatertun.

Masterton anglers are alroady procur> ing tacklo in viow of tho truut-fishing Boason, which commences in about a fortnight.

A pioneer Bottler of the Wairarapa, Mr Samuel Dates, died at Alfredton on Monday, aged 78. It is said of him that he brought tile first vehicle over tho Kimutaka—viz., a wheelbarrow, with fiewfc of »oods, which he wheeled from Wellington, there being no road for the greator part of the journey.

There was anothor good' audience in the Masterton Theatre ltoyal last (Tuesday) evening, when Professor Mason ptave an interesting address on "Tho Cause and Cure of Disease." The musical selections by the '• Quintetto" were much appreciated.

Thore is said to be a great demand for 'small farms in tho Woodville district just now, but the absurd price asked makes it prohibitive, It is not uncommon for owners to oak from £2O to £35 br acre for land a mile away from tho centroof Woodville.

Tho Woodville correspondent of tho Post says:—The railway works at Mangatainoko present a dreary appearance. The contractors were knocked off in consequence uf tho rainy season rendering operations impracticable, and this when the work was about half done,

It is to be hoped a substantial sum will be 'placed on thn Ks'timates for the further construction of this railway, for if ever there was a line in tho colony with a prospect of paying good interest on outlay this is the 0110. The unfinished route is teeming with Bettlew, who have improved their holdings to an extent which ensures big interest 011 tho outlay of about £120,(100 necessary to construct and equip tbo connecting link. Any Government must face tho ways and means for completing this line as the no-borrowing ctajo has worn off Tho sooner both political parties can agree to throw away their no.borrowing cudgels the better for the (jountry—they have been used for Party purposes too long.

A cricket club is to be formed at Hnwera (Forty-Mile Bush) this year. _ A considerable flutter in Prohibition circles in Masterfcun waa caused yesterday by tho bung of a barrel of Speight's XXXX beer, which was being lowered into the cellar at the Occidental Hotel, (lying out. About half a hogshead of beer was lost and the publican and carrier hjjd a narrow escape from drowning, Th.o I'ahjatua Star saysOf the 192 original tnpipbers uf the Wpfldyijle" Mangatjinoka, Woodrillo -Tiroumea, and Wellington Spepial suttlenienfs it ib sajd only nine now retpain, The AMopiafions ,were formed when tho present Premier was Minister of Lands in 1886; and under his rule there was neither dutamyism nor speculation, wo are told.
