The Criminal Sessions.
i Charge of Libel, ■>■ . (By Telegraph.—Press Association). Wellington, Monday. The calendar for the Supreme Court sitting, which opened this morning before the Chief Justice, contains an average number of cases, some of them of a serious description, Referring to the charge of criminal libel agaioßt E. A. Haggen, proprietor of tho Woodvillo Examiner, Judge Prendergaat said it was of a most ferious character, the allegation being node against a chemist in the town of having performed an illegal operation upon a woman, If the accused was able to prove that the charges contained in the article were true, and that the facts were published in the interests oftho public, it would be a sufficient defence, but'the Grand Jury had nothing to do with that. AH they had to consider was. whether the article was libelous, His Honor pointed out that according to the «ositions Haggen seemed to have ed before the article appeared that ho intended to publish it. The (irand Jury threw out the bill •against T, Luff, charged with rape, and Win. Smith, charged with re'ceivr ing stolen goods.
