MASTERTON SCHOOL COMMITTEE.
Tho monthly meeting of the Masierton School Committee was held in tho oiee of the Secretary last (Thursday) evening, there being present Messrs 11, Feist (Chairman), Z. M, Hoar, J, Willhniß, R. M. Galloway, W, (i Beard, C. E, Daniell, W. Pragnell, and W. M. Easthope. MINUTES. The minutes of the previous meetinj! woro read and confirmed. treasurer's report, The Treasurer reported a credit balance of £5 12s 4d, correspondence, From the Town Lands Trustees, stating that tho consideration of tho applications for grants in aid had been postponed until next meeting, and requesting a schedule of past expenditure of votes and estimates of receipts and expenditure for the coming year. From the Education Board, with circulars re Arbor Day. From same, with relerence to the painting of tho school buildings, stating that tlie matter would be considered when the Board's building grant was available.—lt was decided to keep the Board reminded of tho matter.
TEACHERS' REPORTS, The head teacher reported tho number of children on the roll to he 603, the average attendance 437, and the percentage of attendances 72. The attendance during the last wock of July was exceptionally bad owing to the severe weather. There had been an inoreased tendency on the part of parents to keep their children away on every wet day, This interfered very much with the working of tho school. A list of irregular children had been forwarded to tho Secretary. The annual drawing examination would take place on the 7th prox, Mr Lee, Inspector of Schools, bad visited (lie school. The need of painting and repairs had been pointed out to him, together with tho crowded state of trie infant room, in which there were now over, two hundred children, Messrs Feist, Galloway and Pragnell were appointed to supervise the school drawing, Miss Keeling reported that the un» settled weather was still affecting the attendance at the Infant School, The average for tho paet four weeks had been 69, although on several days as many as D 6 had been present, There were 106 on the roll. ACCOUNTS, Thefollowiug accounts were passed for payment when funds permit:- W. Pragnell, lfis; 0. E, Daniell, £2l7s 6d. THE NEW INFANT SCHOOL, A sub-committee consisting of Messrs Feist and Galloway was appointed to arrange with the owners of property adjoining the proposed Infant School in Victoria-street as to the erection of fences, and to make application to the Education Board at the next meeting to provide the fences agreed upon, The Chairman reported that Mr Galloway, the Inspector, himself, and the contractor bad fixed upon a site on the section in Victoria Street for the erection of the new Infant School.
The plans of the new school were inspected by the Committee. VISITING MEMBER, Mr E, M, Galloway was appointed visiting member for the month, ABSENTEE LIST. The Committee then considered the absentee list at some length, after which tho meeting adjourned,
