M. Court on Munday. The Waste Lands Committee took further evidence in respect of tho Masterton Road Board petition on Thursday, Mr Pei'oy Smith, Chief Surveyor, stated that the road through Weraite is the most direot to the back country, has the easiest grades, and would no doubt be required in the future. Roads had boon taken by warrant under similar circamstances (i.e., through grassed lands) since 1886, although the law of&cora of the Grown considered that grassed land waß "cultivated land" within the meaning of tho Act, and therefore could not bo taken under warrant. He declined to produce the instructions given to the surveyors sent to report on the road through Dr. Hosking's proporty, or tho departmental report to the Government on the matter. Tho evidence of the Chairman of tho Road Board (Mr TV, H. Beethain) was re-taken, in order that it might be placed on record. Mr Beetham testified that it was necessary to take tho road, as not only were tho grades easier, but the distance by it to the Coast was eleven miles less than by other roads, Much more evidence has yet to be taken.
