HOSPITAL AND CHARITABLE AID BILL.

Bat Wellington Think

• The New Zealand Times of yesterday eipreased what may be accepted as the feeling of Wellington with regard lo the effort to sever the Wairarapa from the Wellington Charitable Aid Dißtrid. It said in its leader;—We are glad to see that the attempt to interfere with the Hospitals and Charitable Aid District has been nipped in the bud by the House of Representatives. Messrs Hogg and Buchanan will, of course, not share our feelings. No doubt they will consider that the decisive rejection of MrHogg's Bill was due to the lo;al selfishness of a number of city members, Nevertheless, we trust that they will not think ua an> feeling for being glad thereat, We do not for a moment deny that it would be to the advantage of the Wairarapa ratepayers to out adrift from thiscity, But thechange could not Btopthere. Almpsteveryotbercounrty district in the Colony would want to do the same thing. The consequence would be a simply ciushing rate levied

on the larger centres, We do not want to discuss the Hospitals and Charitable Aid question from the standpoint of town versus country. The question has been wrangled over and threshed out time after time in the House of Representatives, It has t' led, not only to prolonged discussion, but at least once or twice to downright stonewalling. We can quite imagine that it will always he a question causing more than usual strength of feeling, The town end suburban members are in a minority on it. But they are a powerful minority, and the possible consequences to their constituents involved in the putting of! of the country districts are simply appalling.
