THE BUTTER INDUSTRY.
A Featherston Dairy,
With reference to the proposal to convert the Broomsflelcl estate into a large dairy farm, we find that this principle of working a large farm is already in full swing in South Wairarapa, end is at: ended with highly satisfactory results. The farm is devoted solely to the butter industry, It is the property of Mr Donald, and is situated near Featherston. About 250 cows are kept in milk, and they are divided into four lots, Bach' lot is kept on a separate part of tbe farm and is in charge of a family who do the milking and are paid a penny a gallon for' the milk which they deliver at the farm factory, _ The farm consists of about 800 acres, but is of course not nearly so good in average quality as the Brocmsßcid eatate. Mr Donald finds the system of working the farm thus a very profitable one, bearing out Mr Sorenson's suggestion. Mr Donald is now adding a freezing plant to his faotory for the purpose of enabling him to work the dairy better during the warm summer months. The weakest point in working a large dairy farm is admittedly the difficulty of providing labor, bub that will be overcome by the adoption of the milking machine, The system devised by Mr Donald certainly gets over tbe difficulty to a large extent and Mr Donald has several families permanently on his farm in connection with tho dairy, and they find Mr Donald's scale of payment a very liberal one, while by paying so much a gallon for the milk he receives, Mr Donald knows that he only pays for the value he obtains.—Woodville Examiner,
