BfilHO IDE EXTENDED TITLE OF TM Waiearapa Daily, with which it is IDENTIOit
The perfect dressing of Flax-fibre is as yet an unsolved problem which has occupied the attention and taxed the ingenuity of colonial inventors for more than a quarter ot a century, Ono and all have failed, so far, but the priae to be gained is so valuable that never within the period we have named have efforts been relaxed to discover the 3ecrct process by which the flax trade of New Zealand might be rehabilitated and a national industry established under assured conditions,
There is, we have reason to believe, at last some guarantee that the problem has been solved, and that the long lane of failure is now being turned. A New Zealand mechanician has recently visited London with the object of ereoting at the metropolis a factory at which the imperfectly dressed fibre of this Colony may be converted into tho ideal texture which has so long been the dream of all interested in the trade, This last invention, may, ot course, be only one more failure, but there are in this instance one or two considerations of a very reassuring character, The author of it is a man who has, as an inventor, already scored a Beries of brilliant successes. He is one of those lucky individuals who does not know what failure meanß in any undertaking to which he applies his brains and energies, and he has at his command sufficient means to develop any work in which he has confidence. We have had ample proof, indeed, that his project is one that is pretty certain to be pulled of, and that it is likely to give to tho Flax industry that element of stability which is essentially necessary to remove it from the category of highly speculative enterprises. ■ We have had an opportunity of forming an opinion of the methods by which the Flax fibre of this Colony is to be prepared for the manufacturer under the new process, but for ob* vious reasons we are not ot liberty to refer to them more specifically at the present time. We are, however, satr isfied that a turning point in the history of the industry has now been reached, and that in the brief reference we have made to tho new departure, we are only anticipating a revelation which will shortly gladden the hearts of all interested in the trade, Indeed, the arrangements for carrying out the ideas of the inventor are now in such a forward atato that the project is unlikely to remain in obscurity for a much longer period. fc)o far the promoter of it, with commendable prudence, has preferred not to announce his intentions from the housetops, and very few people know anything about a project which promises to give new life and prosperity to the.Flax trade of New Zealand,
by the owners of both horses respectiyely> certifying ibat the journey is forthe purpose stated.
