Mr Lawry's Compensation to Licensed Victuallers Bill proposes that additional fees shall bo paid by licensees mid loßsors in rejpect of licenses into a separate account, called the" Compensation Fund Account," which latter shall be supplemented hy the local body to tho exlM of one half. Tho local body invest, ths fund,and shall pay out of it compensation ti publicaiiß whose licenses for various reasons shall be refused, and all persons affected by the refusal of the license shall also be entitled to receive compensation from the fund. Claims for compensation will he heard hy the Resident Magistrate, whose dcoision shall be final.
A representative of tho cloth met with (in unpleasant experience whilst proceeding from Masterton to Wangaehu on Sunday last. His horse—noblo steed as he was—took a notion into his head that ho had gone tar enough when ho had reachod half way and obstinately refused to move another step. Coaxing was at first indulged in, but that proving of no avail the' fkgellator' was applied. Tho result was that the animal gave a sudden bound, and into a wire fenro he went, buggy, and parson and all. The vehiole was considerably smashed about, but the occuriut escaped unhurt. Tho fortnightly meeting of tho Stone, hengo Lodge of Druids was hold in the Foresters' Hall, Masterton, last (Tues« day) evening. There was a good atton» danco of member!. The District President (Bro Snadden) presided, and iifj/f installed the officers for the ensuing term. A very able and lengthy address was also given by the District President upon the general working of tho Ordor. One new member was proposed, and the meeting closed with harmony at 10,30 p,m,
