Municipal Administration.

[to THE EDITOR.] Sib,—lam surprised that the publio press hus not commented upon the disgraceful condition of the streets of £ Mastorton aithe present time. Quora- *"' street especially is in a deplorable • condition, and is practically unOt for any woman to cross, or indeed for any but a desperate mun with whom necessity leaves no choice, to uegociate, The wot weather is only partly r< sponsible for the conversion of tho streets of Masteiton into qungmiros which would be almost shameful in a bush hamlet. Never having been in gaol, and not boing the supporter of a Liberal member, I do not possess a ' practical knowlrdyo of road-making, neither can, it seems to me, the individual who was responsible for negleoting Qiieon-street, Mastorton, until tho middle of winter, and then putting down with tho road-metal a ' horribiy sticky mess of clay which has now been converted into a slushy paste—Ugh I Tho Council cannot remedy the matter now, We shall have to suffer for their stupidity, but let them provide at least ono asphalt crossing in the main street, say at the Club Hotel as being the most generally iffrtseful position. Possibly the cost Would prevent a second crossing, otherwise thero should be a second opposito the Post Office. It Masterton is to have any claim to enlightened municipal care for its residents and wishes to avoid inciting a feeling of disgust in nil visitors to the benighted place, something will need to be promptly done. The sickening smell which emanates from what is supplied and charged for as illuminating gas, ha;, I notice, already bad a word of complaint in your columns, so I will not enlarge upon what has been said, but only hope that improvement will follow in both of these matters, As regards the stroot crossing, the Borough Council must eithor have one made or else set up a ferry boat, I am, etc, " Ratepayer," Masteiton, 4th July.
