(By Diogenes.) Masterton o. Red Stais, The first round of the Senior Cup rnatobes in connection with the Wairarapa Rugby Football Union was completed on Saturday last, when tbefirst fifteens of the Masterton and Bed Star Clubs met on the Park Oval. There was a good attendance of the public, notwithsland- ■ ing that the weather was wretchedly miserable, and considerable interest was centred in the game. The ground was very Blippery, and the match was played in torrents of rain. Both teams were at a disadvantage through having some of their best men away, Masterton being without the services of Watson and E. Holmwood, and the Stars feeling the absence of Iggulden and (ialloway, The latter team, skippered by Qinders, played the first spell with only fourteen men. D'Arcy captained the Yellows. The game was played in two thirty minute spalls, but owing to the unfavorable circumstances the display of football was not by any means brilliant, Shortly after the commencement of play the' leather was carried into Star territory and the Beds were several times forced. From " a fast forward rush Deeming got over the line and drew first blood for Masterton. The kiok was a failure, Shortly afterwards Gray got possession from a loose soruni and scored a second try,' The attempt toconvert again proved abortive. During the remainder of the spell the,. play ,was pretty even., No sooner had the game been'resumed than the Stirs, by some capital passing and dribbling rushes, carried the leather into the Masterton twenty-fives. After a considerable amount ' 'of scrummaging Bernini negotiated a dodgy run and placed a .try to the credit of the Stars amidst .'great applause., The kick' was a and was not successful. %rdly'H'ail'tjje hall been again set in mptio'ri than' the .gotonanotberforwardrushandcariied the. sphere, to the Masterton goal line, Here-a Eofubj took '-place 'and Bernini again getting possession (an in and Bcore'd-a second^'ry. :j "The Masterton skipper appealed, on account of offside play-and' 'it really did appear to onlookers that Bernini infringed the rules'of the game both times he scored—but the referee allowed; tbe, try. L-i .The kick, >Mj, goal was a failure, With the game at four points eaob, both teams played
with 'great determination.); The Mastenon'■; forwards, however, -were too atrong : oppbnerits'and had it pretty mnoh, itheir'.'bwn way. After several fruitless; attempts to score, Harry Perry made the run of the day, and secured another try for Masterton. The score was not increased by 0. Perry, who took the kick. For the remainder of tho game the play was in the oentreof the field, and the matoh endsd: Masterton six points, Stars fonr. For the viotora the most conspiouous players were H. Perry, Gray, Day, and Cameron, and I for the Stars, Hudson, Burns, and T. Welch.'. Bums, who was half-back, played a rattling game throughout, Mr H, Wilson offloiated as .referee, and Messrs G, F. Day and Moses aß' line umpires, A meeting of members of the Masterton Football Club was held on Saturday night, when .Mr A. E, D'Arcy was elected Captain, vice Mr E,M. D.Whatman, resigned, It was announced that there was a balance of £ll9s after paying all expenses in connection with the recent Southern tour. De Jue (Burns) who played with the Stars in Saturday's matoh is a Soutblaud rep, He is a capital half back, and will be a valuable acquisition to the Btar team, He intends settling in Masterton. Pownall played for the first time in a Senior Cup match with the Stars on Saturday, With a little more practice he will make a good man. _ Harry Perry ("The Baby") has improved wonderfully of late. He is certainly the smartest little halt-baok in Masterton, if not in the Wairarapa, The" off-side" play of Bernini was strongly commented upon on Saturday, I understand he also distinguished himself at Carterton in this respect, He ought certainly to be more careful in his play, One of the players in the Master-ton-Star matoh on Saturday—and a prominent player at that—hada wager on the result. This is a deliberate infringement of the rules of the game, and the offender should he intimated that he must not repeat the offence. The Junior Cup contest, played on the Worksop Road ground on Saturday between the Red Star second and the Maungaraki Rovers, resulted in a victory for the former team by seven points to four. This being the first time the Rovers have played together, the low scoring of their opponents showed that they are not to be held too cheap, and will no doubt show up well before the season is completed, They have Borne excellent material in their ranks, and with a little coaching are the making of a fine team. The first spell was in iavour of the Stars, and Gunther and Blinkhorne obtained tries, one of which Emmett converter]. The tables were turned, however, in the second spell, and the Stars had to play a hard defensive game, to prevent the Rovers from eooring. Taueru made the four points for the visitors, and it was sheer hard luck that they did not score more. The Stars played their usual fust game, the greasy state of the ball, however, militating agaimt their baok play, H, Wrigley, and ihe two scorers, being about the best. For the Rovers Kemble, Taueru, Jaro and Sam played exoellently and the whole team strove hard to gain a viotory as the maiden attempt of their Club,
Tbe Mastertnn 2nd-Carterton Pir-, ate beat for the Junior Cup was won by the Pirates by nine points to nil, The matoh was played at Carterton on Saturday and was fast and furious, the winners playing a brilliant game from start to finish, Masterton was not fully represented, having a job to get any sort of a team away.
The Fernridge school fifteen defeated the second of the Masterton School on Saturday, by two points to nil, after a very merry game.
The following team will represent , the 2nd Orientals against the 2nd of the Royal Stars on Saturday next : Full Back, H. Walker; Threequarters, B. Walker, T, Walker, A, Nicol; Halves, T. Wickens, J. Finlayson, P, Corbett ; Forwards, Cade, Donald, Jago, Wilton, Reynolds, Robinson, BraggiDsandEwington; emergencies, Backs,B,Wiokens,W.Smith; Forward, B, Smith,
The weather was anything;but favourable' for the match between Eketahuna, and Tutaekara football teams on Saturday, but despite rain and mud the Tutaekaras were up to time and played a good game. Lacey scored a first try for Eketahuna, and Pelling took.the kick but failed to convert it, In the second spell the play was all in Tutaekara's twentyfives, when Couison scored another try for Eketahuna, Pelling again took the kick, but failed as before. When time was called the scores stood; Eketahuna four points, Tutaekara nil, The visitors were entertained-at a smoke-concert in the evening at the Olub Hotel, where a thoroughly enjoyable time was spent, The Eketahuna Club should have a big say for the Bush Rugby Union Cup, not having been beaten this season. ' The resignation of Mr E, M. D, Whatman as Captain of the Masterton Club bus been received with sincere regret, Mr R, J, Malcolm has been eleoted vice-captain of the Masterton Club, . The surplus from the Southern tour of;the;Masterton Olub has .been handsel to'Mr C. I sm eorry to hear that Day, the well-known forward, has retted from the field, and will play no further this season. His services will be greatly missed by the Masterton Club. A match was played on the Greytown Reoreationßf serve on Saturday last between the Qroytown Hard Oases and the Carterton Boyal Stars, resulting in a win for the former team by eleven points to nil. J. Baiimber, the well-known Greytown half-back, has received employment in the Petone workshops', and will play for the remainder of. the season for Petone. The Alhambratfam inDiinedin waß defeated for the Grst time for three years on Saturday, when Kaikorai put them down by eight points (two potted goals) to nil, • In the Wellington Championship matches on Saturday; the Ponekes defeated Wellington, by a goal and. three tries to nil. Melrose beat Petone by six points to, four! The Ponekes are leading for the Championship, having played and won four matches.: ; ■:; ■ !. '. ; <
