A good deal of senflatioi) was caused in Tory street, Wellington, yesterdny evening, whim it became known tbat 1 a quarrel had occurred between two 1 men living in that thorougbfare which had resulted in' one of them being taken to the hospital, suffering from very serious injuries, It appears, says the N.Z, Times, that a mnn named J. G. Welch, a bootmaker, paid a visit to the houee of Thomas Bransgrove, who is also a bootmaker, and commenced abusing him with respect to some trade matter, Bransgrove resented the insulting and abusive language used to him by his rival in trad«J and, following him outside into the street, struok him and felled him to the ground, In falling Welch's head came into contact with the pavement, It was apparent that be was severely injured, and Dr Maokin was at once cent for. On his arrival he found that the injured man had sustained a severe fracture of the skull, and also that hemorrhaged the brain had set in, about a quart of blood pouring out of the ear. Dr Mackin at once ordered his removal to the Hospital, 'where he still is in an unconscious state, The police wero at once informed of the occurrence, and Detective Campbell proceeded to the scene of the affray, and took Bransgrove into custody. Unless Welch should die in the meantime, Bransgrove will bo charged thia morn-, ing with causing grievous bodily barm, but the medical authorities at the Hospital state that it iB almost impossible for their patient to recover, and the affair is therefore likely to prove ' of a very serious nature.

As far as the police have ascertained the latter brought the offence on himself by going to Bransgroveadd abusing him and challenging him to fight. The latter then struck bim and by misadventure he fractured his skull iu falling. Bransgrove appears to have been forced into the quarrel.
