FOOTBALL.

[By Diogenes.] A match was played on the Park Oval on 3aturday afternoon between the first'filteens of the Masterton and Red Star olflbs, resulting in a victory for the veterans by 22 points to lonr. Both teams were weak, several prominent players being absent, and the Stars wero at a disadvantage in the second spell by losing McSweeny, a very promising three-quarter. D'Aroy and Ginders captained the winning and losing teams respectively, G. H. Smith acted as referee, and Hansen and Eton were line umpires. In the first spell, the Stars played up excellently, and made things very lively for the Masterton team. The first score was made by Masterton, D'Aroy potting a fine goal from it free kick. The forwards of the Stars soon afterwards carried the play to Masterton territory, and after a rattling rush Iggulden scored a try, which Emmett failed to convert. Still playing on the aggressive, the Stars again scored, Tom and Willie Thompson putting in an excellent passing rush, and the former fell over the line. Emmett once more failing, Masterton now looked very, much like scoring, and the Stars were forced down several times, but they were playing a fine defence, and all ' efforts of the Masterton forwards to

score proved fruitless, tho first spell ending Stars i points, Masterton S points. In the second spell, however, Masterton showed their superiority, and played a fine all round game. The passing of the backs was much admired, and it was noticed that they had learnt a great deal during their Southern trip. Gray was the first tu get over the line, C. Perry placing a beautiful goal. This brought their score up to 8 poiuts, Stars 4, and although the latter forwards played well, the backs were weak, and the play was stationed m the Stars territory for nearly the whole of the spell. H, Perry, Simeon, Thompson and Gray each obtained tries, from which 0, Perry and Thompson placed two undeniable goals, this bringing the score up to 22 points. The game from start to finish was aii exceedingly interesting one, the play at times being fast and furious, Of course the result of the game was considered a moral before the teams entered, the field, and the way the sturdy-Stars kept the opposing players at bay during first spell, was indeed surprising. Tho Masterton team without any exceptions played well, the passing, of the backs being very pretty, whilst the forwards faithfully uplwd their reputation, Tho Star backs were weak, several of tha best forwards having to take up positions in tbis.division owing to those picked being absent, The two Thompsons and Galloway played about the best, their plucky collaring being muoh admired. The forwards pluyed hard, but fell off towards the last, owing to indifferent form,

Although the Secretary of tlie Masteuton Club ha's been in correspond, denco with several Clubs, in reference to a match for the Queen's Birthday, nothing has been arranged, and by all appearances good football matohes will be very scarce in Masterton this season.

A writer in the Dunedin Star says : —All those who witnessed the play of the Masterton team in Dunedin will regret to hear that Mr B, M, D. Whatman is another victim of the Southern tour. It appears that during the second spell of the Albambra raa'oh he got kicked in the ribs, but beyond feeling sore at the time took no notice of it until he got home, when, still feelitig the pain, after an examination he discovered that one of his ribs on the loft side was broken. He will not be able to play again for about six weeks. • This is not Whatman's first serious mishap on the football field, the writer of these notes having seen him badly laid out in the match against the English team at Wellington.

A matoh was played on Saturday between theTutaekara andEketahuna Clubs, and was won by lilketahuna by a goal and a try to nil. Tutaekara won the toss, and elected to play with the sun at their baoks.
