A CONFIDENCE SWINDLE.
A Simple Irishman,
Melbourne, April 25, Another confidence swiudle has been reported to the police. Oa the 20th inst a young Irishman, named Stephenson Abraham, arrived by the steamer Ophir, with a draft for £l6O upon the Bank of Now South Wales. At the Flinders-street station he was accosted by two well-dressed, quiet looking men, who entered into conversation with him. They said they had a station in New South Wales, and informed Abraham that he was just the sort of fellow they required, They engaged him on the spot and he was to recoivo 15s per week. It was arranged that the three fere to proceed to Sydney that evening, A room sas engased for Abraham at the Victoria Coffee Palace, and all set out to see the city, Abraham informed them of the bank draft and they suggested that he should go to the bank and cash it, Abraham accordingly handed over the draft and one of them went into the bank and cashed it. On returning be suggested to Abraham that tho .money be invested, to which the latter agreed and the man then went into some place in Collins Street and when ho came out informed Abraham that he had invested the money at 6| per cent. This man soon after left Abraham and his companion, first of all informing Abraham that he would receive tho receipt when tho necessary documents were made out. The second man then appeared anxious to get rid of Abraham, and advised him to go to the Coffee Palace and rest, until he called for him. Abraham did so, hut has not since seen or heard of his friends or the receipt for the money.
