I The Hon. I Martin, f/I.LO. j , I It is with the greatest regret that 1 ) we (Evening Post) have to record tha r death of the Hon, John Martin, which I , oocurred at his residence, Fountain' i Hull, yesterday, about noon, after a | s brief illness. The cause of death was i pneumonia, There were few men , better known in Wellington than Mr , Martin. One of the earliest settlers, , ho worked hard in a humble way at tho 1 start, and rose to become one of Wel» j hngton's wealthiest citizens and to fill s a seat in the Legislative Council. Mt ) Martin passed through all the vioisaiI tudes of colonial life, and worked well I in all. _ He was a steady, shrewd, and , far' Seeing man, and deserved the sue* j cess wbioh attended his efforts, A i native of the North of Ireland, [ he arrived in the colony accom« panied by several brothers, who afterwards went to Otago, where two of them are still alive. ■ Three others died in Otago, Only a few months ago Mr John Martin lost his wife tst he seemed greatly shaken by Ihe blow, He leaves a largo grown-up family, Dr Albert Martin being ono of his sons. It is only a few weeks eiuce Mr Martin returned from s month's visit to the Hot Lakes, acoompanied by Mr Tringliaui, and ho appeared on his return to have benefited greatly by his trip, On Thursday last he was seized with a severe cold, which settled on his lunga and he was unable to rally, Ho waß conscious to within a few minutes of his death, and recognised and spoke to Mr Tringham, who was present, Mr Martin was a large landowner in the Wairampa, His age was 6!). In politics the deceased gentleman was a Liberal, and always voted on that side in th# Council,. He rarely spoke in the Council, but was a regular attendant, Mr Martin was one of the early pro* . motors of steamship enterprise in New Zealand, and did his utmost to the lieadquarters of that enterprisoTn Wellington, He was one of the principal directors of the Circular Saw Line. Somß fourteen years ago Mr Martin presented to the city the drinking fountain which bears bis name, His udexpecled death will bo very generally regretted.
