MASTERTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The Fortnightly Meeting. The fortnightly meeting of tbe Miißtevton Borough Council was held last (Tuesday),evening, there being present the Mayor and Ch E. Chamberlain, E. Feist',' Gapper, Miitrie, Dixon, Hfsseyi''arid Heron, The minutes ofihe previons meeting weroread and confirmed.CORRESPONDENCE. From the Red Star. Football Club, requesting the use of the Council's banners.—Request granted, ' From Mr E, Braggins, nightwatch-; man, asking the Council to contribute towards the nightwatchmau fund.— Referred to the Finance Committee. From Mr W, B. Cbennells, request, ing that bis name be inserted on the Burgess roll—Request granted. From Mr W. Sellar, stating that Mr Dalryraple would be prepared to hand over tho pump in Queen Street to tbe Council at any time that might be fixed. From the United District Charitable Aid Board, enclosing a statement of receipts and expenditure for past year. From Mr W. Sellar, complaining of tho state of the road near his property,—Referred to the Works Committee. Poundkeeper's' Report, The pouudkeeper reported reooipts for the month amounting toil 7s. THE WATER PUMP. His Worship the Mayor said Mr Dalryraple had acted very generously in presenting a water pump to the Borough. He thought a committee of tbe Council should bo appointed to formally receive the pump from the donor. Cr Feist moved that His Worship tbe Mayor and Or Gapper be appointed to take over tho pump, The Mayor seconded.
Cr Gapper moved as an amendment that a vote of thanks be passed to Mr Dalryraple for bis gift, He did not think, however, that the Council should take over the pump. It would be constantly out of repair, and would necessitate a considerable outlay of public money. Cr Dixon seconded the amendment and agreed with what Cr Gapper had Slid, The Mayor thought they should take over the pump, After further discussion tbe amendment was put and carried. WORKS AND FINANCE. The report of tho meeting of the Works and Finance Committee was read and adopted and accounts as recommended passed for paymeut. DEEPENING A COIiVBRT, , The sum of £5 was voted to Mr S, Bartlett for having deepened the culvert opposite the Royal Hotel. MUNICIPAL VIRE BRIGADE, Tho annual reportof the Municipal Fire Brigade was read. An application from the Brigade for two new ladders and a better supply of water was referred to the Works Committee with power to act, The report of the Brigade was received, and on tbe motion of the Mayor a vote of thanks was passed to Captain Pickering and his men for thoir efforts during tbe year, tows clerk's office, Tbe Mayor slated that his notice had beon called to the fact that the offices of the Council were not large enough. Thesufewas insecure and the Town Clerk's office altogether too small. He would move that a committee be appointed to report upon tbe advisability of extending the Clerk's office, building a strong room, and enlarging the library. Cr Heron seconded the notion. After some discussion a Committee consisting of the Mayor and Cre Heron, Gapper, Dixon and Feist waß appointed to report on the matter. DEFECTIVE CHIMNEY. The Town Clerk reported that the chimney in the custodian's residence was defective. Cr Gapper was appointed to investigate the matter!'and was authorised to take, action. PUBLIC READING ROOM. The Clerk stated that tbe Library custodian had complained that the papers filed in the reading room had been deliberately torn from tbe files and scattered about the room. Many pupora had also been mutilated, and in some cases removed, The matter was referred to the Library Committee with power to act. The meeting then adjourned.
