In these days of rampant so-oalled Liberalism it is gratifying to find that at least in one Colony there are sighs of a return to a more healthy tone. The late Viotorian elections have been watched with considerable interest throughout the Colonies and at, Home, The result has been that the vested interests, on which the financial stability of a colony so much depends, are well represented. The Labour Party have lost ground, or.at least have become alive to the fact 'that oipital and the industries on which it works so beneficial an interest, cannot be ridden rough-shod over without detriment to labour itself. As the London Standard points out the" Platform Journalists " and such like demagogues, haye not been able to hold their footing in these Victorian elections, This is only natural, and in all probability a similar result will be felt here at our next general election. Any reader of the class of articles put befoie the publio by so.many of the so-called liberal press of this Colony, cannot but observe that all principle, sound argument, and proved economical truths are' cast aside—the one thing arrived at being to bolster up those illiberal notions wliicl) W'e.tob apt to gain popularity with the class of voters on whom the platformjournalist and his fellows depend lor political life, The linanoial reputation of the Colonies has been so muoh shaken of lato years in Home estimation by our fire-brand efforts $t legislation that this evidence of the turn in the tide comes very opportunely, That the anchor of common'sense has got some hold in one Colony will not be lost on public thought here, so that, we may hope that thoso who have some stake in the country, those who have something more than a couple of blankets and a billy to think of in casting a vote, will take a hopeful view of the profpte of the next elep'.jjn, by which time thesubver> e.ivjQ wind-bags whp, in their efforts to keep afloat, answ.er tp every radical breeze that blows, wjll pe well pricked and flattened out,
Sir Henry Parkes hag shown in an able article in one of the London Reviews that the Labor Party itself, when brought luce to face with the stern and practior.l duties of Legislation aside this classof advopate for men wW truly represent their class and 1 have a work-earned know? ledge of its wants. •' ■■• '
