Tho Opening Soaslon, | The opening of the fifth session of the Mftßterton Mutual Improvement Society was celebrated by a social held 1 in the Wesleyan schoolroom last evening, and was in every respect n decided success, over one 'hundred members and friends being present. 1 .Before entering into the programme, officers were elected for the ensuing session as follows,Presidentßev j J. Dukes, (re-eleoted, unopposed); Vice-Presidents: Messrs ' Eigg and | Steele ; Editor of Journal;• Mr', ! Easthope; Secretary • and Treasurer: ,Mr 0. Pragnell, ■ (unopposed); Committee: Miss Perry and Messrs ! T, Gillespie and J. Burton (unop-' , posed), Two notices of motion were tabled, and twenty-one new.members nominated. A musical programme was then, entered upon, interspersed at.intervals of ten minutes with the usual games, in which both -young and old joined, The first item submitted was a piano duet by the Misses Fold and Williams, which was exquii sitely rendered. A song by Mr Ralph, , " A Hundred Fathoms Deep" was rendered in bis usual first-olass' stylo. ( Messrs Ralph (trombone), Kershaw, 3 Boagey and Pragnell (flutes), consti" j tuted an instrumental quartette, k playing with pleasing effect that popular air, " Hear the ( Trumpet _ Loudly Calling." Miss Dukea then [ gave a pretty pianoforte solo, The j piece rferawJanceoftheevefiingihowj ever,was undoubtedly Mr Candy's pro--1 duction upon the violin, consisting n ot " Home Sweet Home" and other s items., A duet by Misses Prentice e and Dagf! was well received as - was also a song by Miss Perry. Another e duet by Mias Williams and Mr e Boagey.; a pianoforte solo by Miss e Ford, and an instrumental quartette y by Messrs Boagey, Ralph, Kershaw l 8 and Pragnell, concluded a,most en f j joyable evening's amusement. The e President acted as M.O, Mr Heyhoe proposed sr vote of thanks to tho ladies , fl for providing refreshments and to |e Mrs Williamsfor the use of the piano, 1(j which were carried ■ by Declamation, n after which'the National Anthem was aung and a most successful gathering „ terminated, •
