THE WILLIAMS MURDERS.

tho Saapeotea'' Jao|tlio Hipper," [Per Press Association,] . London, March 28,. Ann Morley, of Liverpool, who gave evidence at the inquest oa the todies of the Rainhill victims, stated, that when she heard of Miss Mather's marriage, she fancied Williams was identical with Deeming, whom she had long known',-'' but she 'remained silent because she was uncertain, She thought Deeming's wife (Mario •James) was aware that he was a bigamist, but was not familiar with much of his career. Tha Times Bays that Deeming is essentially n swindler, but only incidentally a murderer. ■ It is rumoured that the. police attribute the" Ripper" murders to a convict, now in Portland Gaol for obtaining money from a woman by throats. Dooming in Now Zealand. There seems to be good reason lor believing that the murderer Deeming and his wile have been in-New Zealand, judging by the following extract from me Age of March 14th: —Mr Solomon, pawnbroker, of (lolling street, on Saturday discovered among his stock a leather Orient trunk, bearing certain labels which seem to indicate that it was onco in possession of the Windsor murderer, Williams. Upon the top of the trunk has been pasied an envelope, half of which is torn away. Sufficient remains, however, to show that it bears the name," Mri A. N, Williams" in a feminine handwriting, and immediately below it are the remnants of a Napier (New Zealand) label. At right angles to the envelope is a steamship label, which reads, " Melbourne, ss, Jubilee," and on one end is affixed another envelope, bearing in hand* writing which closely resembles that' of Williams, tho words " Errand Mrs A. N. Williams, first-class passengers to Napier, via Melbourne, per s.s. Iberia." Other labels have the words" Lyttelton " and" Bennett's" on them. When the trunk-was first discovered by Mr Solomon the infor« mation was. communicated to Deteotives D. G. O'Donnell and Wardley, who conveyed the news to their em/rent, Detectives Considine and Cawsey, and the latter have sinoe been engaged in inquiries with reference to the person who sold it. The name given by the man from whom Mr Solomon bought it was W. H. Smith,, which is the name of tho head of the celebrated line of news agents who for a length of time employed the dead woman in Liverpool. It has already been observ- . that Williams when at a loss for an alias did not even lose the time that would have been occupied iu inventing one, but offered, a name with which be w..s already familiar, such, for instance, as Drouin, which was the name of a gentleman whom there is reason to suppose Williams me! when dining m tf)e Hotel Haarlem, Colombo, and tiVanston, tl)e designation of the street in which for some short time l)e resided prior to his departure for Sydney, As thp dste 01) which the sale of the trunk w&s effected was tlie 10th April, 1891, the iipje given to Mr Solomon presupposes a previous acquaintance, on the part of Williams with thelady whom lieintended to marry, and did actually marry in the later month ot the same year when lie had returned home again. Mr Solomon further stated to the detectives that his oustomer had represented . himself as a sea-going engineer, and subsequent investigation seen|B to 'shqw that on or about the ipith of April last year'an'engineer r.esjdei} a( an tyotel in Flinders Street, and afterwards remoyei} to fin jiotel in Swanston Street, where somo of bjs former associates found him passing under the name of Williams.:
