Swanston, alias Williams and Peeraipg, liaa left for Melbourne, The confession of accused is alleged to have been made to Mr Haynes, who is defending him. Mr Haynes demanded to know tho whole strength of Swanston's defence, and the latter replied that he would make a clean breast of it, He said he.was guilty of the Rainhill murders, but on the subject of the Windsor murder a careful reticence was observed on both sides, _ Mr %nes then asked on the sab. ject of tho Whitechapel murders, aud desired to how whether his client was or waß not " Jack the Ripper," Swanston replied that ho had committed the last two murders in 1890, but he knew nothing of those previously commitied. The prisoner bases his defence to tho Windsor murder upon fact that the crime is alleged, to fjavebeen corrpuitteci on the W\\ of December, while he oan prove by witnesses that his wife was seen in Melbourne on the 29th, five days later. He will assert thatshe cleared out with another man.
