The Autumn meeting in connection with the Masterton-Opaki Jockey Club was held on tho Opali racecourse yesterday. The weather, which had been fine for a fortnight previous, 1 broke on Wednesday evening, and ' although heavy rain did not fall, the i clouda which hung about oh the morn ! of St. Patrick's Day weie extremely I - threatening, and no doubt induced 1 many to remain at home, Fortunately, however, the showers which fell were only li«lit, and the day was by no means unpleasant, The attendance of the public wei about up to the übubl standard, and the purchaser of the Rates had no reason to complain. Visitors were present from all parts of the district, and from the Empire City, Although thero was some delay in getting ofi tho events, the officers of tho Club worked energetically throughout, and are to be complimented upon the success attending their efforts. Mr ' Win. Hii'schberg assumed the respoh- ' sibio position of starter, and consider- ( iug this was his first trial with the ' flag got his fields away remarkably 1 well. The racing itself was not par- ' ticnlarly good, the average timo for 1 the various events being if anything 1 below the standard This maybe ao- ' oounted for by Ihe fact that the course I was rather heavy. There were, however, one or two capital finishes, The presence on the course of Pergeant M'Ardle and 'his able staff of men was ' sufficient to obeck anything in the 1 shape of rowdyism, and everything passed off without a bitch. The proceedingshecauiesomewbat monotonous during the intervals, particularly to thosewhodid not patronise the totalisator, and the absence of music was remarked upon by many. The publicans'booths, both run by Mr E.J. Soarl, of the Star Hotel, were well patronised, and Mr Wickens, who held the privilege ior the refreshment stall, had no reason to complain. The luncheon provided by Mr Wiokens was first-class, indeed, a better could not be wished for, The spieling fraternity were well represented, and more than one" country boy" regrets having made tho acquaintance of these gentry, " The wheel of fortune" was kept briskly going throughout the day, affording opportunity to those who did not patronise the "machine"to invest their humble sixpences with a chance of making a haul. An unfortunate accident occurred in the first race on the programme—the Hurdle Eace. Onion Flag by somo means or other struck the third hurdle, and coming down rolled o'-'er upon his jockeyGeorge Freeth—breakinghieleg badly and inflicting other injuries. The results of the races were as follow HACK HURDLE HANDICAP, of 30 SOVB, 1| miles. 52* J, W.Pemberton's Kaika, list (J. Gravestock) 1 21* H.
