CONCERT AMD SOCIAL.
A Highly Successful lathering, j Tho Concert and Mai held last nigbt in the Theatre Koyal, Masterton, in aid of tho Catholic Uhurch funds, was one of the most successful affairs of its kind ever held in Mas* tfifton, t||o Theatre being literally packed in every part. Ttotfhe pro* gramme was a popular ono cquld not be doubted by anyone who heard the uppliwo bestowed on each " • nothing performer,inm,. ()e . short of an encoro mands of tho audience, The concsi. opened with the overture "Colleen Bawn," very effectively rendered by the orchestra conducted by Mr A. von TCeisenberg. The next item was a song by Mr J, Maginnity, wl;o gave that particularly appropriate ballad " The dear little Shamrock," in a very pleasing manner, The duet 11 1 hear a Brooklet Gushing," by the Misses McLean and Fisher, of Wellington, followed, and was received with breathless silence by the audience, lioih ladies are the porsessors of sweet and cultivated voices, and have ali ready established themselves as great favourites with Wairarapa audiences. Miss Fisher gave the neitt seleotion, " Daddy," and in response, to a vociferous encore treated her hearers to that gem of Erin's songs" Old Dublin Bay." At this stage the comic element was introduced by Mr Peat, who kept his hearers convulsed with an Irish character song and step dance, and on being recalled sustained tho favorable impression created, with the song," My Irish Queen," A covnet solo from the " Bohemian Girl," by Mr Muguire, of Greytown, was after* wards contributed in a manner which proved Mr Maquire's ability as a musician, Mr W. Bray came next with that favourite song " Over the Sea," for the rendition of which ho received well ■ merited applause, Another' song by Miss Fisher followed, her farewell effort being "The Minstrel Boy." Last but by no means least on the list of vocalists came Ml' Duff, of Greytown, with a humorous song of true St Patrick's Day style entitled, " The Hat my Father wore." Mr .Duff, who is'now known here as a sterling amateur comic singer, made some good local hits with his song, and so tickled tho popular fancy that he was not let off until a second piece "Sammy Stammers" was given. This portion of the programme was brought to a conclusion by a Sailor's Hornpipe, given in character by Mr Peat in true nautical fashion, TheEev. Father John McKenna then addressed a few remarks to the apdi* enco, tendering them a hearty vote of thanks for their- strong support. He had, he said, been asked bow it was ! concerts with which he was connected always turned out so thoroughly successful and he had no hesitation in tolling them. The reason was that he (Father MoKenna) was fortunate enough to number amongst his friends several ladies and gentlemen of unusual ability at producing and organising amusements. Quite a staff ot ladies were waiting behind the stago to dispense good things at the present time, and as he understood that somo of hi? friends bad arranged a dance, he had no doubt that the second part of the entertain, ment would be as enjoyable as the first.-The-Theatre was then cleared, refreshments banded 'rpupdj apd seyeral couples formed sefs ior t|ie'.quadrille, the sociafand dpnee 'lgiflg brought to a conclusion about midnight, everyone themselves
